A Friend Pass on Steam is usually a free, game-specific download or demo that lets you join a friend who owns the full game. There is no single Steam-wide rule. Each developer decides who must own the paid version, how much of the game the pass unlocks, how the invitation works, and which features are left out. Read the specific game’s Steam page before you install anything.
Why the rules change from game to game
A Friend Pass is a label developers attach to their own access arrangement. It is not an entitlement that Steam applies across the platform. Steam listings and Steam Support pages identify passes by title; the Steam Support page for DwarfHeim’s Friend Pass, checked October 8, 2026, is one example of a title-specific page. A pass for one game therefore tells you nothing guaranteed about another.
Five details vary from one title to the next:
- Ownership: whether one player or both need the paid game.
- Scope: whether the pass unlocks the full co-op campaign, a limited demo, or a specific mode.
- Invitation method: joining the owner’s session, entering a room code, or accepting an in-game invitation.
- Group size: how many friends can join.
- Exclusions: features such as achievements that the pass version leaves out.
How the Steam listings compare
The table below uses the official Steam store listings checked October 8, 2026. “Not stated” means the listing does not give that detail; it does not mean the feature is absent.

The comparison shows the real differences a reader should weigh: whether one or both players need the paid game, how much content the pass gives access to, how the invitation works, and what is excluded. Those four axes matter more than the label itself.

Official wording from two sources
The Astrumis Steam store page states: “The Friend Pass lets you join a friend who owns the full version of the game — for free!” The same listing identifies Tyci as developer and publisher.
The Party Animals announcement, published on Steam Community and dated January 22, 2024, offers a different model: “Friend Pass allows you and a friend to enjoy "Party Animals" together, with only one of you needing to own the game.” That announcement described a beta in which the full-game owner invited the pass player into a team or lobby. The beta ran from January 25 through February 25, 2024. It is a historical, title-specific beta explanation, not a standing promise that the feature is still available.

How to use a Friend Pass
Pass setups follow the same general sequence, although the details differ by game. No controller, headset, PC upgrade or gift card is required by the pass information reviewed for these titles.

- In the Steam store search bar, type the exact game name followed by “Friend Pass” and open the game’s official listing.
- Confirm who must own the full game and whether the pass is currently offered on that page.
- If the listing offers a pass version, download it from the store page, then have your friend launch the game or host the session.
- Use the invitation method the game describes: join the owner’s session (Follow Us), enter a room code (Whisper Mountain Outbreak), or accept the in-game invitation to a team or lobby (the Party Animals beta).
- Before assuming the pass matches the paid game, check the campaign limits, player count, and achievement exclusions listed on the page.
What to check before you start
- Scope: a pass may give the full co-op campaign (TimeMelters), a three-level demo when both players use it (Astrumis), or a single mode such as Speedrun Mode (TimeMelters).
- Achievements: the pass versions described for Astrumis and TimeMelters do not include achievements.
- Group size: Whisper Mountain Outbreak allows up to three friends to join the owner for free, according to its listing.
- Listing date: the release dates above come from store listings and may not reflect current build versions.
What the evidence does not establish
- That every Steam game offers a Friend Pass, or that any pass stays available indefinitely.
- That every pass version includes the full game’s content. Most examples describe a demo, a limited scope, or a mode.
- That passes work for single-player games. Every example reviewed is a multiplayer title.
- Any portfolio-wide count of Friend Passes or a quality rating. Store review scores on individual pages measure those games, not the pass system.
