It may be a managed collection of game-specific services, a backend assembled from general cloud components, or a combination of the two. It does not automatically replace a game’s authoritative gameplay server.
What does a game backend do?
The game client runs on a player’s device. The backend handles work that needs to persist, be shared across devices or players, or be controlled outside the client: for example, saving progress, validating a purchase, returning a leaderboard, or finding a multiplayer session.
AWS describes game backends as systems that manage game and player state and integrate social and system-level features. Its examples include profiles, item and inventory storage, statistics, and leaderboards (AWS Games Industry Lens: Game backends). The term “platform” can mean a packaged managed service or the set of components a team builds and operates itself; it does not imply one product or a fixed feature list.
What features can a game backend include?
Services vary by provider and game. A casual single-player title may use accounts, cloud saves, analytics, or remote configuration without needing matchmaking. A competitive multiplayer game may also need authoritative server logic, session hosting, and abuse controls. These are choices driven by the game’s requirements, not a checklist every title must implement.

| Feature group | What it does | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and access | Authenticates players, links supported platform identities, and authorizes requests. | Associate progress with a player account across sessions or devices. |
| Profiles, saves, and progression | Stores player data, progress, and statistics. | Restore a save on another device or record a completed level. |
| Game data and configuration | Stores title-level or player-level data and serves selected settings. | Change a balance value or event setting without requiring a client update. |
| Economy and inventory | Manages catalogs, currencies, stores, items, and purchase-related controls. | Track a player’s items or in-game currency. |
| Analytics and events | Collects gameplay events and telemetry for analysis or follow-up actions. | Measure progression or respond to an in-game event. |
| LiveOps | Supports ongoing operations such as scheduled events, messages, remote settings, and experiments. | Run a limited-time event or test a configuration. |
| Competition and social | Provides features such as leaderboards, friends, chat, and presence. | Show rankings or let players find friends who are online. |
| Multiplayer coordination and hosting | May include lobbies, matchmaking, relay or networking, and dedicated servers. | Form a group, find a session, and connect its players. |
These capabilities may be separate services rather than one integrated package. Unity Gaming Services lists services including authentication, Cloud Save, Economy, Analytics, Remote Config, Lobby, Matchmaker, Relay, leaderboards, and chat (Unity Gaming Services: Available services). Microsoft PlayFab documents identity, player data, LiveOps, economy, event processing, leaderboards, chat, matchmaking, and dedicated servers (PlayFab: Features overview).
How does game backend architecture work?
A useful high-level model is: game client → API or real-time gateway → backend logic → data stores and event systems. For multiplayer, a separate path may connect matchmaking and session placement to a game server.

- Client: sends a request, such as loading a profile or submitting a matchmaking request.
- API or gateway: receives and routes the request. Ordinary operations commonly use REST APIs over HTTPS; bidirectional or event-driven features may use WebSockets or messaging.
- Backend logic: checks the request, applies game rules or service logic, and decides what data or action is needed.
- Storage and events: databases retain durable state, while event systems can process or distribute updates asynchronously. A cache may serve frequently requested, low-latency data such as a live leaderboard.
- Optional game server: runs authoritative gameplay for a session when the game design requires it.
These are architectural patterns, not mandatory components from one provider. AWS’s reference design describes REST requests handled through API Gateway and functions, a database for state, and asynchronous notifications; it also covers WebSocket communication and publish/subscribe patterns for interactive updates (AWS: Serverless game backend).
Matchmaking is not the live game connection
Matchmaking finds players or a suitable session; it does not necessarily carry the gameplay traffic. In AWS’s session-based reference flow, a client sends an authenticated matchmaking request with latency information. Matchmaking finds a group and requests session placement. Once the service returns status and connection details, the client connects to the game session and supplies a player-session identifier for server validation. AWS notes that real-time games often use UDP for the direct connection (AWS: Multiplayer game server hosting).

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This distinction matters when evaluating a platform: lobby, matchmaking, relay, session placement, and dedicated game hosting are related but different jobs. A game can use some without using all of them.
Managed platform, custom backend, or a hybrid?
A managed game platform can reduce the amount of infrastructure a team must build for common game services. A custom backend offers more choice over service boundaries and data models, but the team must integrate and operate those components. A hybrid can use managed services where they fit while retaining custom APIs or game-specific server logic.

AWS’s guidance presents choosing technologies for individual backend features and extending a solution over time as one approach (AWS for Games: Build a Production-Ready Game Backend on AWS). PlayFab says its capabilities can be selected independently or used together, and can be extended with bespoke game services (PlayFab: Features overview). These provider materials describe their own offerings and patterns, not an independent ranking. Confirm current support, limits, service status, security requirements, migration options, and terms directly before committing to a production design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right backend approach
- List the game’s online requirements. Separate must-haves—such as cloud saves or authoritative multiplayer—from optional features such as chat or experimentation.
- Map each requirement to a service. Do not assume that “backend” includes matchmaking, dedicated servers, or every social feature. Identify which component owns each function.
- Check fit with the game and its players. Verify engine SDKs, target platforms, identity providers, regions, and expected latency.
- Decide what the client may control. For competitive or valuable game state, determine which actions need server-side validation rather than trusting client-submitted values.
- Compare the operating burden. Account for integration, monitoring, scaling, security, incident response, and migration—not only initial implementation.
- Verify current commercial and technical terms. Pricing, quotas, regional availability, and service commitments change and are not established as fixed figures here.
Examples of backend use
Cross-device progression
Authentication associates a player with an account, while cloud storage keeps progress available beyond one local installation. Unity documents cross-device cloud save and account services; PlayFab documents player data and progression. The details—such as conflict resolution and data limits—depend on the implementation and service.

Live events and tuning
A team can use remote configuration, scheduled tasks, segmentation, or experiments to adjust selected settings and operate events after launch. Unity and PlayFab document examples of these capabilities, but teams should verify which settings can be changed safely and what clients or servers must do to apply them.
Competitive multiplayer
A backend may authenticate players, form a lobby, find a match, place a session, and return connection details. The client then connects to the game server, where authoritative game logic can validate gameplay. The backend platform may supply some of these pieces, but matchmaking alone is not a substitute for the live game server.
Analytics-driven operations
Gameplay events and telemetry can help a team understand behavior and trigger operational workflows. Event collection is not automatically the same as a full analytics pipeline: check what is captured, how it is processed, and what retention and access controls apply.
