But giving up a scoring chance does not automatically mean the goalie made a mistake: defending the slot, disrupting passes and clearing loose pucks are also team responsibilities. To judge a particular play fairly, look at the sequence and what the goalie could see and reasonably do—not only at whether the puck went in.
What the goalie is responsible for
The goalie is the last line of defense, but not the only one. Their job is to stay engaged as the play develops, read the puck and likely threats, and establish a position that gives them a chance to make the save. USA Hockey’s coaching guidance says goalies should approach every shot with the intention of stopping it; making a save also means tracking what happens to the puck afterward (USA Hockey’s season-long goaltending plan).
That expectation is about competing and responding, not guaranteeing a stop on every chance. A screen, deflection, pass across the scoring area or uncovered attacker can leave the goalie with little time or visibility. The play’s development matters when deciding whether the goalie made a reasonable read and response.
What happens after the first save
A save may leave the puck in play. The goalie should track it and respond to the rebound: control it, direct it away from immediate danger, recover to face a new threat, or cover it when appropriate. USA Hockey’s coaching plan treats the rebound and the goalie’s follow-up as part of completing the save.

- OFF-ICE GOALIE MOVEMENT: Rollie Goalie Sliders are performance slide plates designed to help hockey goalies train and play with smoother butterfly slides, recoveries, pushes, and lateral movement away from traditional ice.
- BUILT FOR ROLLER, DEK, BALL, STREET & FLOOR HOCKEY: Designed for off-ice goalie use on common training and game surfaces including sport court, tile, gym floors, synthetic ice, and other suitable hockey training surfaces.
- ADULT & JUNIOR SIZE OPTIONS: Choose Adult for goalie pad sizes 32"+ or Junior / Intermediate for pad sizes 26"–32". A universal upper plate pairs with size-specific lower plates for a better pad fit.
- ENGINEERED PRO ROLL CHAMBERS: Designed with engineered roll channels that help reduce drag and support smoother sliding performance. Includes acetal bearings for smooth surfaces. For open-grid athletic flooring and modular sport courts, switch to pro roll chamber mode by removing the bearings and sliding directly on the engineered pro roll chambers for smooth, controlled movement.
- MADE IN USA WITH REPLACEABLE WEAR PARTS: Built for serious goalie training and backed by a limited lifetime warranty on structural components. Wear items such as straps and bearings are replaceable and excluded from lifetime coverage.
Defenders share the next task. They may need to clear the rebound, tie up an opponent in front of the net or cover a loose puck. If the goalie makes the initial save but a nearby attacker reaches the rebound first, assess both the rebound’s direction and the skaters’ response rather than treating the goal as proof of a goalie failure.
How the goalie and skaters share the chance
Goalies and defenders work together: skaters can limit access to the shooting lane, disrupt passes, protect the dangerous area and block shots, while the goalie reads and reacts to what gets through. Former NHL goaltending coach Jim Corsi described the principle as needing “a system of skill sets that work in concert with the team defense” (NHL.com, March 8, 2018).

That coordination matters when a chance comes from a turnover, a pass across the slot, a screen or a loose puck. The goalie is expected to compete and make the best available read, but is not automatically responsible for creating or preventing every advantage. Which skater owns a shooter, passing lane or rebound depends on the team’s system; assignments are not universal.
How to judge a specific chance or goal
Use the sequence of the play rather than the final result alone. This checklist is a practical way to review the responsibilities involved, not a standardized goalie-grading formula.

- Trace how the chance formed. Was there a turnover, lost coverage, pass through the slot, screen, deflection or rebound?
- Check what the goalie could see. When did the puck and threat become visible, and did a screen or deflection change the read?
- Assess the goalie’s position and balance. Were they set in a position suited to the puck and likely threat, or did the play require a lateral push or recovery?
- Follow the puck after a save. Where did the rebound go? Could it reasonably have been controlled or directed away from danger?
- Identify the defensive assignments. Which skater was responsible for the shooter, passing lane, screen or loose puck under that team’s system?
A goal on a dangerous chance is not automatically the goalie’s fault, and the fact that a goal was scored is not enough on its own to establish goalie error. The useful question is whether the goalie made a reasonable read and response within the play—and whether the skaters carried out their assignments.

Goalies are also expected to remain engaged after a difficult goal or save and move on to the next threat. University of Connecticut men’s hockey assistant coach Alex Westlund, quoted by USA Hockey in January 2026, described “moving on to the next save, moving on to the next play” as a constant theme for good goalies (USA Hockey, “Building Confidence in the Crease”). That reset is part of staying ready as play continues; it does not change how responsibility for the chance itself should be assessed.
