A Steam profile is the Community page attached to your Steam account. It gives you a shareable gaming identity and can display your avatar, badges, showcases, and selected game or Community activity. Privacy settings determine which parts other people can see.
Steam profile vs. account, library, profile name, and SteamID
These terms refer to different parts of Steam. The profile is the social-facing page; the account is the underlying login and ownership record.

What can appear on a Steam profile?
A profile’s layout and visible details vary. Privacy controls, the content you choose to feature, and Steam’s current interface all affect what appears.

- Identity: Profile name, avatar, background, summary, custom Community URL, and featured badge. The featured badge can appear near the top of the profile and in the mini-profile shown when someone hovers over your avatar.
- Progress and collectibles: Steam Level, badges, and profile items such as backgrounds or emoticons.
- Showcases: Panels that highlight selected content, such as favorite games, achievements, screenshots, inventory items, artwork, guides, reviews, or Workshop contributions, where available.
- Games and activity: Game ownership, playtime, recent activity, and achievements may appear if the relevant privacy settings allow them and the game is not marked private.
- Community presence: Friends, comments, groups, and Community contributions may be visible, depending on your settings and Steam’s presentation.
Steam describes profiles as customizable with elements including avatars, showcases, badges, and owned-game information. The Steam Community Profiles support page also explains that privacy controls affect visibility. Steam’s Trading Cards FAQ describes badges and showcases.
How to find and edit your profile
- Open your profile: In the Steam client or on the Steam website, select your profile name or avatar and choose View Profile (or the equivalent option in your language).
- Open the editor: On your profile, select Edit Profile.
- Choose what to change: Use the relevant section for your general information, avatar, background, mini-profile, theme, featured badge, showcases, or privacy settings.
- Apply changes: Save or apply the edits if prompted. Privacy-setting changes save automatically according to Steam’s support instructions.
- Share the page if you want to: Copy the profile’s browser address. The exact menu wording and layout can vary by platform, client version, and language. Steam’s instructions for accessing the profile through the profile/avatar area may appear with translated labels.
Steam profile privacy settings
Steam offers three overall profile-privacy states: Public, Friends Only, and Private. To change the setting, open your profile, select Edit Profile → Privacy Settings, then choose the state you want. Labels may differ in translation or after interface changes.

These are not necessarily one all-or-nothing control: Steam also provides settings for categories of profile information. Check the individual options rather than assuming that the overall profile state controls every detail identically. The available states and navigation path are listed in Steam’s profile-privacy instructions.
Choose based on how you use Steam. A public profile may suit someone who wants an open Community presence; Friends Only is one possible balance; Private may better fit someone who prefers less visibility. None is universally best.

Private game vs. hidden game
Mark as Private controls what other people can see about an individual game. Hide this game is primarily a way to organize your own library; hiding a title there is not the same as making it private to other users.

Steam documents three ways to mark a game private: in the client through the game’s Manage options (or its privacy route), from the game list on your Community profile in a browser, or during purchase from the shopping cart. The client route requires the client to be online. See Steam’s private-game instructions for the current steps.
Private does not mean invisible in every multiplayer situation. Steam notes that a SteamID may still be visible to other players on the same server, and an invited friend may see relevant in-game status while joining a private game.
Steam Levels, badges, and showcases
Steam Level
Your Steam Level is profile progression associated primarily with badges and participation in Steam systems. It is not a competitive rank, measure of skill, or proof that an account is trustworthy. Steam says leveling can provide profile customization options and increase the maximum friends-list capacity. Specific rules can vary across Steam systems and promotions, so avoid treating historical badge or XP details as a guarantee about every current feature.

Badges
Badges are account-linked Community icons for activities such as completing a trading-card set, participating in an event, completing Community tasks, or marking an account anniversary. Some badge crafting can award XP and profile items. Badges are distinct from in-game achievements, even though both may be featured on a profile.
Showcases
A showcase is a profile panel for selected content. Steam’s documented rule is that a normal showcase can be selected and customized from the profile editor after reaching Level 10, with another slot at each additional 10-level milestone. Content still depends on what you own or have created, and privacy settings can affect what other people see.
The Points Shop also lists showcase-related items and other profile customization products. A shop item may be a cosmetic or an extra rather than a new normal showcase slot; check the specific item description before assuming what it unlocks. Steam’s badge and showcase FAQ, Steam Level information, and Points Shop profile catalog describe these systems.
Profile links, custom URLs, and safe sharing
Your profile can use a Community URL based on your numeric SteamID or a custom URL you choose. A custom URL is easier to share, but it is not the permanent SteamID. Changing your profile name also does not change your account name or SteamID. To find the numeric ID, open your Community profile and select Edit Profile; Steam’s instructions explain where it appears in the profile URL area when no custom URL is set, and how to expose it if one is configured.

A profile link can help friends or community members find you, but it does not prove that a message, trade, or support request is legitimate. A familiar profile name or avatar can be copied, and displayed names can change. Steam warns that people may find and add users through in-game names or profile content.
- Do not put personal contact details in your profile summary unless you want them exposed to the audience allowed by your privacy settings.
- Be cautious with unexpected friend requests, trade offers, and links in comments, chats, or messages.
- Never give another user your password, Steam Guard or recovery codes, payment details, or a CD key.
- Treat claims of Steam Support contacting you through Steam Chat, a friend request, or Discord as suspicious. Steam says Support does not use the Friends network to contact users.
- Before signing in, check the domain carefully. Steam lists official login domains including
steampowered.com,store.steampowered.com,steamcommunity.com, andhelp.steampowered.com.

You do not need a separate profile subscription to create, view, edit, or privatize a Steam profile. Some cosmetics and customization items are obtained through Steam systems such as the Points Shop, badges, events, or Community features. These are optional: profile cosmetics do not improve gameplay, competitive ability, or account security. The Points Shop lists categories such as avatars, frames, backgrounds, mini-profile backgrounds, game profiles, and showcases; item availability and details are specific to the current catalog.
Common profile problems
A friend cannot see your games
Check the overall profile privacy, the game-details setting, whether that specific title is marked private, and whether the profile is being viewed while signed in to the intended account. If a setting was just changed, refresh the profile before diagnosing further.

You cannot see or use a showcase
A normal showcase slot may depend on reaching the required Steam Level. A Points Shop item may need to be equipped or configured, or may be a cosmetic rather than a new slot. The showcase may also lack eligible content, or the content may be private.
Your old name still seems to identify you
A profile-name change does not change the account name or permanent SteamID. It also does not make a profile link, existing conversation, or other context proof of a person’s identity.
Someone claims to be Steam Support
Do not share credentials, codes, payment information, or keys. Use Steam’s official support site rather than a link or instructions sent by an unexpected contact.
