A video encoder compresses your video into a stream a platform can receive. If you stream from a computer, software such as OBS can encode it using your CPU or a supported GPU’s hardware encoder, so you usually do not need to buy a separate encoder box. Dedicated hardware makes sense only when it solves a specific production or equipment constraint.
What a video encoder does
A camera, game, screen capture, or other video source must be prepared in a format the streaming service can ingest. An encoder compresses the video and applies settings such as resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Streaming software can also combine sources and scenes before encoding and sending the output.
- Encoder: The software or hardware doing the compression.
- Codec: The format used to encode the video, such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: A separate device in the video signal chain. This is different from an encoder built into a computer’s graphics hardware.
OBS, for example, lets you select a service or server, enter a stream key, and configure output settings. An instruction to “choose an encoder” may mean selecting an option in software—not buying a separate appliance. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Software encoding vs. hardware encoding
OBS includes the x264 software encoder, which uses the CPU. On supported systems, hardware encoding uses a specialized component in the GPU, offloading some work from the CPU. That can reduce CPU load, but it does not eliminate the demands of rendering a game, compositing scenes, or running filters and other software. OBS: Hardware Encoding

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Option | How it encodes | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Software (x264 in OBS) | Uses the CPU to compress video. | Image quality depends on the settings and available CPU capacity. Encoding competes with the game and other work on the computer. |
| GPU hardware encoder | Uses a specialized encoding component in a supported GPU. | Can reduce CPU load, but quality depends on encoder generation and settings. OBS notes that earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. |
| Separate encoder appliance | Encodes outside the streaming computer, as part of a dedicated production signal chain. | Consider one only if you have an identified need involving sources, portability, reliability, or workflow. It is not a universal requirement for computer streaming. |
Codec availability also depends on your software, operating system, hardware generation, and streaming destination. Check that the service accepts your intended codec and that your hardware can encode it in real time. OBS: Audio/Video Formats Guide
Do you need to buy a separate encoder?
Usually not if you are streaming a game or other computer-based video and your existing setup can handle the workload. Start by checking the encoders available in your streaming software and testing them with your actual scenes and content. A separate appliance or additional capture hardware may suit a specialized workflow—for example, one built around external HDMI sources—but do not buy one without identifying the problem it is meant to solve.

Meeting a software’s published system requirements does not guarantee smooth streaming. The demands vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; a compatible computer can still struggle with a particular workload. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help find starting settings for your system. OBS: System Requirements
Check the streaming service’s settings
Settings are platform-specific. YouTube’s live ingest guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. For YouTube, the guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. For YouTube, its current live encoder guidance gives these examples for 1080p at 60 fps:
| Codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings for other services. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain, check upload speed, and test the actual stream. YouTube also transcodes an ingested live stream into multiple output formats for viewers; that does not remove the need to send a stable source stream.

Local recording choices are not automatically the right choices for a live stream. OBS describes H.264 as broadly compatible and its default recording codec, while HEVC and AV1 support varies; AV1 may require a high-end CPU for real-time software encoding. Confirm platform acceptance and hardware support before choosing a codec. OBS: Audio/Video Formats Guide

- Configure the destination: In OBS, select the streaming service or server and enter the stream key through the service setup. Treat the key as a password; do not publish it or show it on screen. Follow the platform’s current setup instructions. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Set output and video: Choose an encoder and set bitrate, resolution, and frame rate in the streaming software. For YouTube, use its encoder recommendations as a starting point, then account for the capacity and stability of your upload connection.
- Run a representative test: Include the audio, motion, game load, scenes, and sources you expect during the real stream. A quiet desktop test may not reveal problems that appear during gameplay or complex transitions.
- Monitor stream health and system load: Check the platform’s stream-health information and OBS performance while testing. A stream can fail because the computer is overloaded even when the internet connection is adequate.
- Adjust one workload factor at a time: If the stream is choppy or OBS reports overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify demanding scenes, or reduce filters and browser sources. If 60 fps is not sustainable, try 30 fps; then test again before changing hardware.
OBS identifies GPU overload and other system bottlenecks as potential causes of encoding or rendering problems. Reducing resolution or frame rate can lower the load; scene complexity, filters, browser sources, and a game’s GPU use may also contribute. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
