What Is an HDMI Capture Card—and Do You Need One for Streaming?

An HDMI capture card brings video and audio from a console or another HDMI source into computer software for streaming or recording. You may not need one: built-in console broadcasting can be enough for casual streams, and a single gaming PC can usually capture its own game directly. A card is most useful when you want console gameplay in a computer-based setup, more control over scenes and overlays, or a separate streaming PC.

What an HDMI capture card does

A capture card takes an HDMI signal from a source—such as a game console—and makes it available to recording or streaming software on a computer. In a common external setup, the source connects to the card’s HDMI IN, the card connects to the computer over USB, and software selects the card as its video source. Desktop internal cards may connect through PCIe instead of USB. Elgato’s explainer describes the card as a bridge between a console and a PC.

Many external cards also have HDMI passthrough: a separate output that sends the picture to a TV or monitor so you can play while the computer captures the feed. Capture and passthrough are different outputs, with potentially different specifications.

Can you stream without one?

Console streaming for casual broadcasts

PS5 and Xbox have built-in streaming options, which may be sufficient if you want to broadcast without a computer-based production setup. A capture card plus computer software can provide more control over scenes and overlays. The available features depend on the console and current platform options; check the platform’s current documentation for the details that matter to your setup. Elgato’s July 15, 2026 guide discusses these options.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Streaming a game from the same PC

Usually, no capture card is needed. Streaming software can capture a game running on that computer directly. A card does not do the PC’s encoding or inherently improve this single-PC arrangement.

Streaming from a second PC

A card is often useful in a dual-PC setup: the gaming PC sends its HDMI output to a card connected to the streaming PC, where software receives the video for production and encoding.

Nintendo Switch 2

The cited July 2026 guide says Nintendo Switch 2 has no built-in streaming option. To stream its gameplay through a computer workflow, you need a capture card to bring the console’s HDMI output into that workflow.

Longer recordings and custom layouts

A card can route console footage into computer software for recording sessions and layouts that built-in console tools may not provide. Recording limits vary by platform, so check current console documentation rather than assuming a particular duration.

Capture versus passthrough: compare both

Capture resolution and frame rate describe what the computer can record or send to viewers. Passthrough resolution and frame rate describe what the card can send to the connected display while you play. A high passthrough number does not guarantee capture at that same resolution or frame rate. HDR support can also differ between the captured feed and the display path. Elgato’s comparison explains the distinction.

Specification What it tells you Why it matters
Capture resolution and frame rate The maximum detail and motion rate in the recording or stream This is the feed viewers see and the footage software records.
Passthrough resolution and frame rate The supported signal to your monitor or TV This affects the display you play on while capturing.
HDR capture Whether the captured feed supports HDR, and at which modes Do not assume HDR passthrough means HDR capture at the same resolution or frame rate.
HDR passthrough Whether the display output supports HDR, and at which modes Check this separately if HDR on your gaming display matters.

What to check before buying

  • Source output: Confirm the console or other source has an HDMI output and that the card accepts the signal you intend to use.
  • Capture and passthrough modes: Check the maximum resolution and frame rate for each path—not just the largest number in the product name or headline.
  • HDR behavior: Verify HDR support separately for capture and passthrough.
  • Computer connection: Check whether the card uses USB or PCIe, which USB generation it requires, and whether the manufacturer supports your operating system, computer hardware, and any USB hub in your setup.
  • Setup and cables: Check which cables are included. Passthrough requires a display connection from the card’s HDMI OUT, which may mean a second HDMI cable.
  • Protected content: Confirm the source’s settings and the card’s documentation. A capture card does not remove content protections.

Example: Elgato Game Capture Neo

As one model-specific example, Elgato’s Game Capture Neo manual lists HDMI input, HDMI passthrough, USB 3.0, up to 4K60 HDR passthrough, and up to 1080p60 capture. The manual lists Windows 10 64-bit, macOS 12, or iPadOS 17 or later among its system requirements and specifies computer hardware requirements as well. These are specifications for this model, not a description of all capture cards; check the manual for the current requirements before buying.

Basic external-card setup

  1. Connect the source: Run an HDMI cable from the console or other source to the card’s HDMI IN.
  2. Connect passthrough, if needed: Run HDMI OUT from the card to the TV or monitor. If you do not want to play on a display connected this way, passthrough may not be part of your setup.
  3. Connect the card to the computer: Use the required USB port, or install an internal card in a compatible PCIe slot. For the Neo setup, Elgato recommends a direct connection to USB 3.0 or better and says not to use a USB hub.
  4. Choose the source in software: Open your recording or streaming software and select the capture card as the video source. Elgato’s quick-start guide names OBS Studio and Streamlabs as options.
  5. Confirm the result: Check that the software receives picture and audio, then verify the captured resolution and frame rate separately from the image on your display.

For the documented 4K X PS5 setup, Elgato’s quick-start guide says gameplay capture can show a black feed if HDCP is enabled and gives instructions for turning it off. Follow the guide for gameplay capture only; this does not make protected video available to capture.

Common problems and fixes

  • Software shows no picture: Confirm the source is connected to HDMI IN, the card is connected to a supported computer port, and the card is selected as the software’s video source. Check the card’s instructions for supported signal modes.
  • The display works, but the recording is lower quality: Passthrough and capture can have different limits. Check the capture specifications and selected software settings rather than relying on the display output’s resolution or frame rate.
  • PS5 gameplay capture is black: For the 4K X workflow, check the HDCP guidance in Elgato’s quick-start guide. Its instructions concern gameplay capture and should not be treated as a way to bypass protections on video content.
  • The card is not detected or behaves unreliably: Check operating-system and hardware requirements, use the specified connection, and, for the Neo setup, connect directly to USB 3.0 or better rather than through a hub.
  • HDR looks different on the display and in the recording: Check the card’s HDR capture and passthrough specifications separately; they may not support the same modes.

Or let it run in the cloud

A capture card is for bringing a live HDMI source into computer software. If what you want instead is a YouTube channel kept live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
