An IGL in PUBG is an in-game leader—also called a shot caller—who helps a squad choose and stick to a shared plan during a match. A PUBG Mobile guide describes the IGL as the squad’s strategist, making key decisions while teammates focus on carrying them out. The exact division of leadership can vary by game and team; this guide’s role description is specifically about PUBG Mobile.
What does an IGL do in PUBG?
The IGL takes in the game’s changing situation, makes big-picture calls, and communicates a plan that teammates can act on. In its description of PUBG Mobile roles, the PUBG Mobile guide on the Apple App Store identifies the IGL as the strategist and shot caller. Its examples include choosing rotations and compounds, considering safer routes and vehicles, and deciding whether the squad should engage, disengage, or hold position.
That does not mean the IGL must perform every task or that every team gives one player absolute authority. The guide distinguishes between the IGL’s strategic decisions and teammates’ execution; it does not establish a universal leadership structure for PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS teams.
How an IGL makes a call
A useful way to understand the job is as a loop: read the situation, choose a course of action, communicate it, and keep the squad coordinated as circumstances change.

- Read the situation. Consider the play area, available routes, possible positions, and whether a fight fits the squad’s position and timing.
- Choose a plan. Call a route or compound, or decide that the squad should take a fight, avoid it, disengage, or hold.
- Align the squad. Make the intended action clear enough that teammates can execute the same plan rather than split between competing options.
- Adapt when the situation changes. A call is a decision for the current game state, not a rule to always be aggressive or always avoid fights.
Rotation decisions: move early or risk moving late?
Rotations are a central part of the role described in the PUBG Mobile guide. As the play area shrinks, the IGL weighs when to move, which route to take, and where the squad wants to position itself. The choice is situational: moving earlier may help the squad reach a position before pressure builds, while waiting may preserve options but leave a riskier move later. The guide’s suggested practice is to review whether an early move reduced risky late rotations—not to assume that early movement is always correct.
Compound selection and vehicle use are part of this same decision. A route that looks safer on the map may not remain so as the match develops, so the IGL’s job is to make a call based on the conditions rather than follow a fixed route formula.

When should the squad fight, disengage, or hold?
The IGL also helps decide whether to commit to an engagement, leave it, or stay in position. None of those choices is automatically best. The call depends on the squad’s current position and what it is trying to accomplish; the role description does not prescribe aggression or avoidance as a permanent strategy.
For players learning to make these calls, evaluate the reasoning and information available at the time—not only whether the match ended in a win. A sound decision can still have a bad outcome, and a favorable outcome by itself does not prove that a risky decision was sound.

A simple drill for practicing IGL calls
The PUBG Mobile guide suggests practicing rotation decisions aloud in a match. Use the exercise to make your reasoning visible and review it afterward:
- Before the play area shifts, mark a route and say where you intend the squad to go.
- As the match develops, make the rotation call aloud and explain the immediate plan to teammates.
- Afterward, review whether moving early reduced the risk of a late rotation. Treat this as a decision review, not a measured success-rate test.
The goal is to build a habit of turning a read of the match into a clear, shared plan. The guide does not prescribe a particular voice-chat protocol or say that a separate piece of equipment is required.
How PUBG esports rules relate to the IGL role
PUBG Esports describes S.U.P.E.R. as the Standard and Universal PUBG Esports Ruleset. A 2020 PUBG Esports development letter discussed rules at the tournament level and play guides within matches, while a March 2023 announcement said S.U.P.E.R. settings would align with Ranked Mode settings beginning with patch 23.1. Those statements provide esports context, but they do not define a mandatory IGL role or a universal way teams must divide leadership. The 2023 settings alignment is historical, not confirmation of current settings.
