For YouTube Live, choose a bitrate that matches the encoder’s codec, resolution and frame rate—not one universal number. For H.264, YouTube Help recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. Your connection must sustain the total stream bitrate, with room to spare.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrates for H.264
The following are YouTube Help’s current recommended video bitrates for H.264 live ingestion, accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can maintain them.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube’s table also gives minimum values, which are not the recommended targets: for example, its H.264 minimum is 6 Mbps at 1080p60 and 5 Mbps at 1080p30. Check the matching codec column in YouTube’s live encoder settings if you send AV1 or H.265/HEVC; do not assume the H.264 figures apply.
How to choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain
- Check the outgoing stream format. In your encoder, identify the video codec, resolution and frame rate being sent to YouTube. The bitrate recommendation depends on those ingestion settings.
- Match the codec and format to YouTube’s table. Use the recommendation for the codec you are actually sending and the resolution and frame rate you selected.
- Measure available upload capacity. The connection needs to handle the stream continuously, not just reach a high speed briefly. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. If you send a backup stream as well as the primary stream, YouTube’s guidance is to allow for both stream bitrates plus that headroom within your available outbound capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test a representative stream. Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. While live, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages for problems.
Encoder settings that affect a live stream
- Bitrate mode: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery to its servers. Its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps.
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full codec-specific table and applicable ingest details. These are live-streaming recommendations, not instructions for rendering a video file to upload.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live bitrate is not upload bitrate
A prerecorded video upload and a live encoder feed are different workflows. YouTube’s separate upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR uploads at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates. Those upload figures do not replace the live-ingestion recommendations above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Bitrate, latency and buffering
Latency is the time between the encoder or camera capturing the event and viewers seeing it. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; it is most useful when you need to interact with viewers, and less important for a broadcast that does not involve audience interaction. YouTube also says 4K/2160 streams do not offer the low-latency option and use normal latency. Latency choice is separate from selecting a suitable bitrate. Details are in YouTube’s live latency guidance.
