Animals that eat it gain more friendship and use fewer tufts than they do with ordinary grass; it also produces two hay when successfully cut with a scythe. It grows naturally on Meadowlands Farm, while players on other farm types can plant it with a Blue Grass Starter.
How blue grass works
Blue grass is forage for farm animals, not a separate crop. The 1.6 update introduced it alongside Meadowlands Farm, which starts with blue grass, a coop, and two chickens. The official changelog describes Meadowlands as having “a chewy blue grass that animals love.” Stardew Valley 1.6 Update Full Changelog

The friendship and consumption values are game mechanics documented on the Grass page of the Stardew Valley Wiki. The hay yield applies when a scythe successfully cuts the grass; a silo must be built for cut grass to produce hay.
Where to get blue grass
Meadowlands Farm
Blue grass grows naturally on Meadowlands Farm. It does not appear naturally on every farm map.

Other farm types
For other farm types, buy the Blue Grass Starter recipe in Qi’s Walnut Room for 40 Qi Gems. Each starter requires 25 Fiber, 10 Moss, and 1 Mystic Syrup. Using a starter places one clump, which can then grow and spread. See the Blue Grass Starter page for its recipe details.
Does blue grass spread faster?
No. Since version 1.6.9, blue grass spreads at the same rate as normal grass; older claims that it spreads more slowly are out of date. Natural grass spread requires tillable soil, so a clump will not spread across every tile that merely looks grassy. Starters can be placed in winter, but blue grass does not grow or spread during winter, as described in the official 1.6 changelog and the Wiki’s Grass mechanics page.
