Capcom’s REX project is a staged evolution of its proprietary RE ENGINE, not a publicly announced replacement engine or a tool for automatically generating finished games. Its reported AI angle is about making development workflows—including testing and quality assurance—more efficient, while keeping creative work human-led. Capcom has not yet published measured studio-wide efficiency gains or a rollout schedule.
What is REX?
Capcom describes REX as the next generation of RE ENGINE, introduced by adding new technology over time rather than discarding the existing engine in a single replacement. The company says the approach is intended to keep the engine evolving with IT trends and to improve usability with input from professional engineers and students. (Capcom’s Online Integrated Report 2025)
RE ENGINE is already a production platform for rendering, editing, playtesting and QA, and it supports sharing assets and moving personnel between projects. Capcom says its original development began in connection with Resident Evil 7, released in 2017. In its 2025 report, Capcom described an R&D Foundational Technology Department of approximately 200 engineers, including around 160 responsible for engine development; those figures refer to that department, not all developers or all REX staff. (Capcom’s Online Integrated Report 2025)
Why does Capcom say the development environment needs to change?
In its August 25, 2026 announcement for the RE:2026 conference, Capcom said RE ENGINE projects have grown substantially in assets and code compared with the 2017 development environment. The company cited slower asset retrieval, editor operations and script builds as factors reducing iteration speed. It also said the engine now has more than 2,000 active users, increasing the demands on usability. (Capcom’s RE:2026 announcement via PR TIMES)

Capcom also identified autonomous AI-agent use for testing and QA as an area that calls for a more flexible environment. This is a stated development need and conference topic—not evidence that autonomous testing is already deployed across Capcom’s games. The same announcement listed a separate RE:2026 session on autonomous-play AI for testing and shift-left QA. The event was scheduled for October 2–3 in Tokyo and October 17–18 in Osaka, 2026. What REX systems have been reported?
At a REX session at RE:2026 on October 2, 2026, Gamebiz reported on Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida’s presentation and named five systems. The descriptions below reflect that event report; they are not an independently audited technical specification from Capcom. (Gamebiz’s October 2, 2026 report on the REX presentation)
Rank #2
| System | Reported purpose |
|---|---|
| RE:Dox | A common data-processing approach intended to make loading and editing data more efficient. |
| RE:UI | A framework for development-tool interfaces. Gamebiz described separating visual presentation from state, reducing unnecessary redraws and enabling gradual integration into existing tools. |
| RE:Log | A logging and communications system. The report described compact ID-based records, centralized log storage and a unified protocol. |
| RE:Flows | A visual way to author game behavior that, according to the report, translates into a programming language and supports collaborative work. |
| RE:Runtime | A runtime approach described as translating programs into Capcom’s RE:C++ language and managing large numbers of instances in batches. |
The same report said shared, standardized programming-language rules are intended to make systems easier for developers and AI to read. It described future ambitions including AI code assistance and automated test play. These are reported goals, not proof of a current studio-wide deployment or a published schedule for implementation. The available statements point to workflow assistance, not a promise that AI will author finished game content. In its FY2025 results Q&A, Capcom said it was incorporating generative AI into stages of development and making concrete progress toward using it in some areas. The company framed the goal as improving routine-work efficiency so developers can devote more time to creating value, while saying that creativity at the heart of game experiences should be handled by people. Capcom’s wording describes its policy at the time of that answer, rather than establishing an absolute rule for every future use. It also cautioned that game development is multifaceted and complex, so it would take time to quantify the efficiency results. No measured studio-wide REX productivity gain is established in the sources cited here. (Capcom FY2025 results Q&A)
