In co-op, a simulated chain links the players and can snag on platforms, so each jump becomes a group decision: one player’s mistake can drag everyone else into a fall. “Only Up meets Human Fall Flat” is a useful shorthand for the upward climb and chaotic co-op, but the chain is the defining twist.
How Chained Together plays
The goal is to ascend a vertical obstacle course toward a summit. Players must navigate platforms and time jumps while staying connected by a chain that interacts with the environment. That link makes the climb a shared physical challenge: teammates need to coordinate their pace and movement, because a stumble or poorly timed jump can affect the rest of the group.
You can play solo or with as many as three friends, for a maximum group of four. Steam lists online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. The chain is not just a visual feature; it changes how the group approaches obstacles and makes cooperation central to the climb. Steam’s official listing describes the game’s modes and setup.
Difficulty modes and ways to approach the climb
Steam describes three main difficulty choices, each changing the pressure of a run:

- Beginner: Includes checkpoints, so a fall does not necessarily mean restarting the entire climb.
- Normal: The standard, punishing climb.
- Lava: Rising flames add time pressure as the group climbs.

What the “Only Up meets Human Fall Flat” comparison gets right
The comparison points to two broad ideas: a difficult upward climb and the unpredictable comedy of trying to cooperate through movement-based obstacles. It is a framing, not a claim that the games have identical mechanics. The defining confirmed distinction in Chained Together is its shared chain, which wraps around platforms and makes the group’s movement interdependent.
If you are deciding whether the comparison fits your group, consider what you want from a co-op game: a climb where a failed jump can cost progress, a group size of up to four, and a physical constraint that forces players to coordinate. Official Steam materials also list bundles featuring Human Fall Flat, Gang Beasts, and Escape the Backrooms; those bundles are a discovery route to related games, not evidence that their gameplay is the same.

Release, platform, and future support
Chained Together launched on June 19, 2024, for PC via Steam. Steam lists Windows system requirements and says online play requires a high-speed internet connection and a good connection between players. Meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee a particular level of performance on every PC. The Steam store page has the current requirements and availability information.

Secret Mode identified Anegar Games as the original developer and said a new development partner would be added. The official Steam listing and later announcements identify Lab42 as a developer and development partner; Steam announcements also said Anegar Games would step back while Secret Mode and the new team worked on a future roadmap.

Secret Mode reported on June 2, 2026, that the game had sold more than 10 million copies on Steam and had a 90% Very Positive rating from over 50,000 reviews worldwide. Those are publisher-reported figures from that date. A Steam listing snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, showed 90% positive from 20,600 English-language reviews and 79% positive from 523 recent reviews. The Steam figures are a live-store snapshot and differ in scope and timing from the publisher’s totals.

Secret Mode has said the game won at the Golden Joystick Awards and The Streamer Awards, but the announcement reviewed here did not specify categories or years. The sales and review figures establish commercial success and a strong reception; they do not, by themselves, explain why the game went viral.

Race Mode and cosmetic updates
A September 2026 official announcement introduced a 2v2 Race Mode, in which teams compete to climb within a 30-minute limit, along with two free outfits. The same announcement said a Golden Chain cosmetic was available for purchase.
