Elden Ring Nightreign is a standalone co-op action-survival game set in a parallel-universe corner of the Elden Ring world. Rather than continue the original game’s open-world campaign, it sends players on short expeditions through Limveld to survive the encroaching Night’s Tide and hunt powerful bosses called Nightlords. It launched on May 30, 2025.
Is Nightreign an Elden Ring expansion?
No. Nightreign is a separate game, not a conventional story expansion that requires the original Elden Ring. Bandai Namco describes it as taking place in a parallel universe associated with Elden Ring, in the region of Limveld. Its structure is built around repeatable expeditions, rather than one continuous open-world campaign. What happens during an expedition?
Each expedition is a race to become strong enough to face increasingly dangerous bosses before the Night’s Tide closes in. Players select a Nightfarer, explore Limveld for weapons and power, and adapt as the region shifts. The map can vary in its biomes, weapons and enemies, so an expedition is not simply a fixed route through the same encounters.
- Choose a Nightfarer. Each character has distinct weapons and abilities.
- Explore and prepare. Search Limveld for equipment, upgrades and opportunities to strengthen the team.
- Respond to the Night’s Tide. The advancing Tide puts pressure on the team to move toward the next encounter instead of exploring indefinitely.
- Survive the days and bosses. Players who make it through each day face a boss; the third day culminates in a Nightlord encounter.
- Use what a run earns. Even a failed expedition can award relics, which players use to tailor builds for later attempts.

Can you play alone, or is it multiplayer only?
The game is designed around three-player teams, but it also supports solo play. Bandai Namco says solo mode does not require an internet connection. An announcement-era Forbes explainer described solo runs as much harder; that is an early report’s characterization, not a formal difficulty specification in the publisher’s launch guide. Who are the Nightfarers?
Nightfarers are the playable characters players choose for an expedition, each with their own weapons and abilities. Bandai Namco described eight distinct Nightfarers at launch. The later expansion, The Forsaken Hollows, added Scholar and Undertaker, so eight refers to the launch roster rather than the roster after the DLC. The launch guide covers the original game, while the DLC release announcement describes the additions.
Where can you play Nightreign?
Elden Ring Nightreign launched May 30, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The launch guide says crossplay is limited by console family: PS4 and PS5 players can play together, as can Xbox One and Xbox Series players, but crossplay between console families is not available. Bandai Namco’s guide lists the platforms and crossplay details; its launch announcement confirms the release date.

The Forsaken Hollows is an expansion that launched December 4, 2025. It adds two Nightfarers, Scholar and Undertaker; new areas and threats; two bosses for the third day; and a Shifting Earth condition that changes the map. Bandai Namco says owners of the Standard Edition can buy the DLC separately, while some premium editions include it. What is the clearest way to think about Nightreign?
Think of it as an Elden Ring-universe spin-off built around pressured, replayable co-op expeditions: a team searches a changing map for strength, the Night’s Tide forces the pace, and the run builds toward boss fights and a final Nightlord. It borrows the setting and action-RPG identity of Elden Ring but has its own campaign structure and can also be played alone.
