Epic Games is an American video-game and technology company best known for Fortnite, Unreal Engine and the Epic Games Store. It makes and operates games, builds tools for creating 3D content, runs a digital storefront and provides services used by developers. Fortnite is one of Epic’s products—not the name of the company itself.
Founded by Tim Sweeney in 1991 and headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, Epic has grown from a game developer into a connected ecosystem for players, creators and studios. Here’s what its major products do and how they fit together.
What does Epic Games do?
“Epic Games” most often means Epic Games, Inc., the company. Depending on the context, people may also use it to mean the Epic Games Store or Epic’s broader account and services ecosystem. The company’s main activities fall into four connected areas:

Epic says it has more than 800 million accounts and 6 billion friend connections across Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket League and the Epic Games Store. Those are company-reported ecosystem figures, not independently audited totals. Epic’s company overview describes its products and history.

What games does Epic make?
Epic’s best-known game is Fortnite, but its broader lineup includes Rocket League and Fall Guys. These games are part of Epic’s connected ecosystem, though the details of accounts, purchases and cross-progression can vary by game and platform.
The Epic Games Store also carries games from third-party studios and publishers. A game appearing in the store is not necessarily made or published by Epic; the storefront is a distributor, not just a catalog of Epic’s own titles. Epic’s distribution information explains its publishing platform.
What is Fortnite’s relationship to Epic?
Fortnite is Epic’s flagship consumer product and a platform for multiple kinds of play. In addition to Battle Royale, its experiences include LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival, as well as islands made by creators. Epic also uses Fortnite for seasonal content, live events, social play and in-game purchases.

Creators can build and publish Fortnite experiences using UEFN and related tools. Eligible creators may be able to earn through Epic’s creator programs, subject to the applicable terms and rules. Epic’s Fortnite developer and economy page outlines the platform and monetization system.
What is Unreal Engine?
Unreal Engine is a real-time 3D engine: a set of tools and technology for building interactive experiences. An engine can handle graphics, lighting, physics, animation, audio and input, so developers can create a project without building every underlying system from scratch. Unreal is used for games as well as film and television, broadcast, live events, architecture, automotive visualization and simulation.
Unreal Engine is not simply “free” in every commercial situation. Epic offers different licensing models, and the applicable terms depend on what is being made and how it is used.

What is the Epic Games Store?
The Epic Games Store is a digital storefront and launcher. Players use it to buy, download and update games; developers can use it to publish and distribute titles. It carries Epic’s own products and third-party releases, and Epic also supports mobile distribution in some markets, subject to operating-system and regional rules.
For developers using Epic’s stated revenue-share program, the store advertises a 100% developer share on the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product, then an 88%/12% split. Epic says the threshold resets each January 1 starting in 2026. The program has conditions and exclusions, so the headline percentages do not automatically describe every transaction. Epic also lists a recoupable $100 submission fee per game before release. See the revenue-share program terms and the distribution information.
For players, the store is one option among PC and mobile game storefronts. It may appeal to people who want a particular game, use Epic’s ecosystem or take advantage of a promotion. The trade-offs are familiar: another account and launcher can split a library, and availability, payment options and features vary by title, device and country. Store exclusivity can also be a drawback for players who prefer to keep their games in one place.
What is UEFN?
Unreal Editor for Fortnite, or UEFN, is a version of Unreal Engine for making experiences that run inside Fortnite. It gives creators tools to build games and interactive environments for Fortnite’s audience, with publishing and potential monetization handled within Epic’s platform.

UEFN is not a drop-in replacement for making a standalone Unreal Engine game. Its tools, content rules, technical boundaries, publishing process and commercial model are tied to Fortnite. That can make it a practical route for a creator who wants to reach Fortnite players, but a poor fit for a project that needs its own runtime, storefront, product identity or complete control of distribution. How does Epic Games make money?
Epic has several business lines, and the cited public information does not establish what share of its revenue comes from each. Its revenue sources include:
- Fortnite: in-game purchases and other digital offerings.
- Games: sales of games Epic develops or publishes.
- Epic Games Store: commissions on third-party sales and distribution arrangements.
- Unreal Engine: qualifying royalties, seat licenses and other commercial or enterprise arrangements.
- Platforms and marketplaces: developer services and digital creator resources, including marketplace activity.
Epic is privately held, so its current revenue, profit and valuation should not be inferred from its product reach. The company announced a $1 billion funding round and a $28.7 billion equity valuation in 2021; that is a historical valuation, not a current figure. Why did Epic challenge Apple and Google?
Epic litigated against Apple and Google over mobile app-store policies, including payment rules and commissions. The disputes made Epic a prominent advocate for more competition in app distribution and payments. The legal outcomes are not one single, universal “win”: cases involved different claims, courts, remedies and appeals, and mobile-store rules vary by jurisdiction.
In a March 2026 report about Google’s proposed changes following litigation, the Associated Press described a jury finding that Google’s Play Store arrangements were unlawful in certain respects. That development does not mean every restriction disappeared or that Apple and Google’s systems now work alike everywhere. The AP report covers that specific development.
What changed for Epic in 2026?
Epic remained a major games and technology company, but it also faced business pressure. The Associated Press reported in March 2026 that Epic announced layoffs affecting more than 1,000 employees amid weaker Fortnite engagement and broader industry pressures; the report said Epic characterized the slowdown as beginning in 2025. Layoffs are meaningful business context, but on their own they do not establish the long-term prospects of Fortnite or the company. How is Epic Games different from Steam, Unity and Roblox?
These names overlap in games and creation, but they are not interchangeable:

For a player, the practical question is usually where a particular game is available and which launcher or account setup is acceptable. For a developer, the choice depends on the intended audience, tools, publishing needs and license terms—not on a revenue-share percentage alone.
