Evo Moment 37 is the famous exchange in the 2004 Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike match between Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong: with almost no health left, Daigo’s Ken parried all 15 hits of Wong’s Chun-Li Super Art, then counterattacked to win the round. It is also known as the Daigo Parry.
What happened in Evo Moment 37?
The exchange took place on August 1, 2004, at Cal Poly Pomona, during the losers’ bracket final of Evo 2004’s Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tournament, according to ABC News’ retrospective. Wong had a super meter and a powerful attack that could finish the round. Daigo was close to defeat; blocking would still have caused damage, while a successful parry would let him avoid it. The sequence unfolded in three beats:
- Wong launched Chun-Li’s Super Art while Daigo had almost no health remaining.
- Daigo parried all 15 hits in succession.
- He immediately turned the defense into a combo, knocked Chun-Li out, and won the round.
How does parrying work in 3rd Strike?
To parry, a player inputs a direction toward the incoming attack as it lands. A correctly timed parry avoids the damage; blocking does not. ABC News describes the timing window as four of 30 frames of the impact animation. That specific figure is ABC’s account of the mechanic, rather than a separately cited game manual or frame-data specification.

Parrying is risky because the defender has to commit to a directional input at the right moment. A mistimed attempt can leave the character open to the attack. In this situation, blocking was not enough to save Daigo: the chip damage would have ended the round, so he needed the parry sequence to survive.
Why was Daigo’s parry more than fast execution?
The play involved anticipation and positioning as well as precise inputs. Capcom’s account quotes commentator Seth Killian describing how Daigo mirrored Wong’s movement: “Daigo is mirroring his actions. That’s not an accident. Daigo has made his play.” Capcom’s account

ABC News’ retrospective says Daigo stayed at full screen, anticipating that Wong might use the fast super to close out the round. Daigo therefore committed to a narrow survival option based on what he expected Wong to do; the successful parries were the execution of that read.
Why is it called “Moment 37”?
“Moment 37” is the name given to the highlight, not the number of hits or parries. ABC News reports that organizer Ben Cureton chose a random two-digit number for it, intended to suggest that Evo had many noteworthy moments. The familiar name “Daigo Parry” describes the central feat more literally.

What makes the clip memorable?
The combination is unusually easy to understand even if you are new to the game: a player appears one hit from losing, avoids a long super attack one strike at a time, and turns the defense into a winning counterattack. But the stakes alone do not explain the play. Daigo had to anticipate the attack, choose the high-risk parry instead of blocking, and execute the sequence under pressure.
