What Is Frame Rate (FPS) in Live Streaming?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FPS means frames per second: how many video frames are captured, encoded, or delivered each second. For many talking-head streams, interviews, and presentations, 30 fps is a practical starting point. Choose 60 fps when fast movement—such as gameplay or sports—will benefit from smoother motion and your camera or capture source, encoder, computer, network, and platform can all sustain it. There is no universally best frame rate; it depends on the content and the whole streaming setup.

What FPS means in a live stream

A video is made of successive still images, or frames. A frame rate of 30 fps means 30 frames are delivered each second; 60 fps means 60. A higher frame rate can make motion appear smoother because it provides more temporal samples, but it does not automatically make a stream look better. Resolution, bitrate, encoding, source quality, and playback conditions also matter.

Frame rate is sometimes discussed as a camera setting and sometimes as an encoder or output setting. The stream can only deliver the intended rate if the source captures it, the encoding system processes it, and the destination accepts it.

Should you stream at 30 or 60 FPS?

Consideration 30 fps 60 fps
Content motion Often adequate for talking, interviews, slides, and relatively static scenes. More useful for fast gameplay, sports, and other scenes with frequent movement.
Bandwidth and bitrate Can require less than a comparable 60 fps stream, depending on resolution, codec, content, and platform. Typically places greater demands on the stream, especially with high motion. It does not mean bitrate must always double.
Encoding capacity May be easier for a constrained computer or encoder to sustain. Requires the source and encoder to process more frames; insufficient capacity can cause dropped frames or instability.
Platform support Check the destination platform’s current limits and settings. Check that the platform supports the selected rate. YouTube and Amazon IVS documentation cited here support up to 60 fps.

For the specific platform figures below, YouTube’s current live encoder table recommends H.264 at 1080p at 14 Mbps for 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 60 fps. At 720p, its H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps for both 30 and 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for the stated codec and settings, not universal guarantees or a rule that applies unchanged to other services.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Amazon IVS’s current configuration documentation gives these maximum recommended bitrates: 480p at 30 fps, up to 1,500 Kbps; 720p at 30 or 60 fps, up to 4,500 Kbps; and 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, up to 8,500 Kbps. Those figures are specific to Amazon IVS, and should not be substituted for YouTube’s guidance.

Other published guidance illustrates why provider values should not be mixed into a single formula. Google Cloud’s H.264 source recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p at 25/30 fps, 15 Mbps for 720p at 50/60 fps, and 20 Mbps for 1080p at 50/60 fps. Cloudflare says live creators should typically use a bitrate well under 12 Mbps and notes that high-motion, high-frame-rate content typically needs more bitrate than low-motion material such as slides. Different services and pipelines make different assumptions.

Does 60 FPS use more bitrate?

Usually, a higher frame rate increases the amount of video information an encoder must handle, so 60 fps often calls for more bitrate than 30 fps when other settings are similar. But bitrate needs depend on resolution, codec, motion, platform, and encoding choices; doubling the frame rate does not necessarily mean doubling the bitrate. Amazon IVS describes the relationship directly: “Bitrate, FPS, and resolution are interrelated.”

Fast gameplay with rapid camera movement is more demanding than a mostly static presenter or slide deck. Cloudflare’s guidance is that high-motion, high-frame-rate content typically should use a higher bitrate, while low-motion content like slide presentations should use a lower bitrate. Treat platform tables as starting points and verify that your sustained upload capacity can support the chosen configuration.

How to choose and test your streaming FPS

  1. Match the rate to the content. Start with 30 fps for mostly static scenes. Consider 60 fps when fast motion is central to what viewers need to see clearly.
  2. Check the entire capture and streaming chain. Confirm that the camera or capture device, encoder software, computer, and destination platform support the target resolution and frame rate. A camera advertised for 60 fps does not by itself ensure a stable 60 fps stream.
  3. Set resolution and bitrate using platform guidance. Consult the current settings for your destination, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check that the recommended bitrate fits your available sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a short-lived peak speed.
  4. Run an upload speed test and rehearse. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate and testing before going live. Rehearse with motion similar to the real event, then check audio and stream health.
  5. Adjust based on what the test shows. If frames are dropping or the stream is unstable, reduce frame rate, resolution, or bitrate as appropriate, then test again. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can identify what improved stability.

Common FPS problems and fixes

  • The stream drops frames at 60 fps: The computer, encoder, capture source, or network may not sustain the selected output. Check resource use and stream health, then try 30 fps or a lower resolution or bitrate and rehearse again.
  • The picture looks choppy despite selecting 60 fps: Verify that the capture source actually provides 60 fps and that the encoder output and platform settings match. A selected output rate cannot restore frames that were never captured.
  • The stream becomes unstable after increasing FPS: Higher FPS can raise encoding and bandwidth demands. Confirm upload capacity and platform bitrate guidance; reduce settings until the complete pipeline is stable.
  • There is little visible benefit from 60 fps: For low-motion scenes, 30 fps may be adequate. Use the rate that fits the content and remains reliable rather than increasing it by default.
