What does “E-Day” mean?
E-Day is short for Emergence Day: the moment the Locust Horde rises from beneath the planet Sera and begins its assault on humanity. The game turns that pivotal event in the series’ history into an origin story, centered on Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as young soldiers confronting the invasion. It is set fourteen years before the first Gears of War. Xbox’s official game page describes the premise as a fight to survive the opening days of the attack.
What is the story and setting?
The setting is Sera at the start of the Locust invasion. Rather than continue the story after an earlier game, The Coalition chose to show how the crisis began and how Marcus and Dom’s friendship took shape under pressure. The premise is deliberately spoiler-light: the official description establishes the invasion and the characters’ struggle to survive, without detailing later plot turns.
In a June 7, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, The Coalition described its creative aims through themes such as brotherhood, brutality, melancholy beauty, spectacle, and renewed horror. Those are the developers’ stated intentions, not a critical assessment of the finished game.

What kind of game is it?
Xbox classifies Gears of War: E-Day as a third-person cover-shooter. The campaign supports solo play, two-player split-screen co-op on console, and online co-op for up to four players. Split-screen is console-only, and online multiplayer features require a subscription that includes online multiplayer, according to the Xbox listing.
Announced multiplayer modes
- Horde Siege: a cooperative PvE mode described by Xbox Wire as an expanded, multi-squad wave-survival experience.
- Versus: competitive PvP, announced as 4v4.

When does Gears of War: E-Day release?
Premium Edition early access began worldwide on October 1, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time (15:00 UTC). The worldwide launch is scheduled for October 6, 2026, at the same time. These dates and times are reported in the October 1 Xbox Wire launch update. So, on October 4, early access is live while the general launch is still ahead.
Which platforms and access options are listed?
Xbox lists the game for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11. Its FAQ also names Steam and says the game is available on day one through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox Wire additionally identifies cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. Xbox Play Anywhere supports access across Xbox console and PC with shared progression, according to the Xbox listing. Store access and cloud availability can vary by region; check the local storefront for current details.

The official editions announcement lists physical and digital Standard Editions, a digital Premium Edition, a digital Premium Edition Upgrade, and a Collector’s Edition. Collector’s Edition contents include a 15-inch Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago diorama statue, replica Carlos Santiago COG tags, an art print, an in-game photo, a thank-you note, and a custom SteelBook case. Xbox customers receive a physical disc; Steam customers receive a digital token. The publisher says quantities are limited and availability varies by region.
