Gintama is a comedy-action manga and anime about a former samurai taking odd jobs in an Edo, Japan, transformed by alien invaders. Created by Hideaki Sorachi, the series pairs absurd jokes with action and more earnest character drama. Newcomers can start with either the original manga or its animated adaptation, depending on which format they prefer and can access.
What is Gintama about?
Gintama imagines an alternate Edo-period Japan after aliens known as the Amanto arrive and reshape society. Traditional samurai-era imagery sits alongside tall buildings, trains, motorcycles, and other modern technology. The story follows Gintoki Sakata, a samurai who earns a living by taking on odd jobs with his companions.
The official anime synopsis presents Gintoki as an irreverent, sweet-toothed “last samurai” in this changed Edo. That unlikely setting gives the series room to move between everyday misadventures, action, and stories about its characters.
Why does Gintama shift between comedy and drama?
Comedy is central to Gintama, including jokes that play with the conventions of manga and anime. One official Crunchyroll episode listing, for example, uses the self-aware title “Watch Out! Weekly Shonen Jump Sometimes Comes Out on Saturdays!” It is a taste of the series’ willingness to poke fun at the medium, not a description of every episode.

The tone is not limited to disconnected gags. The official anime portal lists substantial story arcs, including Benizakura, Yoshiwara in Flames, Shogun Assassination, Farewell Shinsengumi, and Silver Soul. The official synopsis describes the experience in terms of laughter, tears, and warmth: expect comedy alongside action and more serious material, though their balance varies across the series.
How did the manga become an anime?
Hideaki Sorachi created Gintama as a manga. VIZ says it became a hit when it began running in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004, and the official Japanese Shonen Jump page also identifies it as a Weekly Shonen Jump series. VIZ notes that Sorachi’s one-shot “Dandelion” is included in volume 1 of the Gintama graphic novels.

The anime adapts Sorachi’s original work. Bandai Namco Pictures’ official information page credits Sorachi as the original author, identifies Weekly Shonen Jump as the manga’s publication venue, and lists the anime’s production staff and music by Audio Highs. The manga is the source work; the anime presents the story as animated episodes.
Should you start with the manga or anime?
Both are reasonable entry points. Choose based on whether you prefer reading at your own pace or watching an animated adaptation with music and performances.
