Lift-off distance (LOD) is how high you can raise a mouse before its sensor stops tracking movement. A lower setting can keep your cursor or FPS crosshair still while you lift and reposition the mouse, but setting it too low for your pad or mouse feet can cause stutter or tracking dropouts. The right setting is the lowest one that remains reliable on your actual setup.

What lift-off distance means

A mouse sensor reads the surface beneath it and turns that information into cursor movement. When you raise the mouse, tracking may continue briefly; LOD is the height at which the sensor stops reporting usable movement. In plain terms, it is how far you can lift the mouse before the cursor stops following it. It is commonly discussed in millimeters, although many mouse settings offer labels such as Low, Medium, and High instead of a physical measurement.

LOD is a behavioral cutoff, not simply the distance from the sensor lens to the desk. Mouse feet, the sensor’s position and recess, pad compression, surface texture, firmware, and calibration all affect the effective height. A Low setting on one model therefore cannot be assumed to match Low on another.

Why LOD matters in games

LOD is most noticeable when you lift and recenter the mouse, often called clutching. A low-sensitivity player may move the mouse across a large area, lift it near the edge of the pad, and place it back down to continue aiming. If the sensor keeps tracking while airborne, that repositioning can move the cursor or crosshair unexpectedly. A prompt cutoff helps prevent that unwanted movement.

This makes LOD a useful control variable for frequent-lift players, particularly in tactical FPS games. It does not automatically improve aim, and it is not a substitute for a comfortable mouse, suitable sensitivity, or consistent technique. For players who rarely lift the mouse, it may have little practical effect unless they notice a tracking problem.

Low versus high LOD

Setting tendency Behavior while lifting Potential advantage Potential drawback
Low Tracking stops closer to the pad Less chance of cursor movement during repositioning May stop tracking prematurely or stutter near the cutoff on some surfaces
High Tracking can continue farther above the pad More tolerance when the mouse is slightly raised or the surface is challenging Cursor movement may continue during a lift

These are relative descriptions, not standardized physical values. Manufacturers implement settings differently, and the same mouse can behave differently with another pad or set of feet.

Is lower LOD always better?

No. Competitive players often prefer a low cutoff because it reduces unintended movement while repositioning, but the lowest available setting is not automatically the most reliable one. Endgame Gear warns that an excessively low LOD can cause stutter, especially on rough pad textures where tracking may repeatedly switch on and off near the threshold (Endgame Gear’s LOD guidance). A 2024 UIST study discusses the trade-off between unwanted movement and tracking stability, as well as the lack of a standardized measurement methodology (UIST publication record; paper PDF).

  • Too high: the pointer may move while you lift the mouse.
  • Too low: tracking may drop out or stutter close to the surface.
  • A good fit: tracking stays stable on the pad and stops promptly when you lift.

Lift-off distance and landing distance are different

Lift-off distance describes the cutoff as the mouse rises. Landing distance describes the threshold at which tracking resumes as it is lowered. The two thresholds do not have to be identical. Razer’s Asymmetric Cut-off feature provides separate lift-off and landing controls on supported sensor implementations; its documentation describes up to 26 adjustment levels for supported Focus Pro implementations, not every Razer mouse (Razer Focus Pro sensor details; DeathAdder V3 example).

What LOD should you use?

There is no universal ideal number. Treat these as starting points, then test the mouse, pad, and feet you actually use.

Player or setup Starting point What to watch for
Competitive FPS, low sensitivity, frequent lifts Low Raise it if tracking stutters or cuts out near the pad.
General gaming Low or Medium Choose the setting that tracks consistently and stops acceptably during a lift.
Rough or textured cloth pad Medium, then test Low may be unstable on some combinations.
Thick aftermarket skates Medium or High if tracking is unreliable Replacement feet can alter the sensor-to-surface geometry.
Cursor moves while lifted Lower the setting if possible Retest after changing it.
Mouse stutters or loses tracking near the surface Raise the setting Also inspect the pad, sensor, and feet.
Mouse has no adjustable LOD Test its default behavior on your intended pad Consider that behavior before buying if you lift frequently.

Do not assume that 1 mm is always ideal or that a manufacturer’s “Low” corresponds to another brand’s measurement. RTINGS treats lower LOD as generally preferable in its gaming sensor testing, but its ratings belong to its test framework and are not a universal manufacturer standard (RTINGS sensor specifications test).

Razer mice with Smart Tracking

  1. Open Razer Synapse and select the mouse from the Dashboard.
  2. Open Calibration.
  3. Select Smart Tracking.
  4. Adjust the available lift-off or cut-off control.

Razer’s Synapse instructions apply to supported mice, not the entire product range (Razer support instructions). Separate lift-off and landing controls are also limited to supported sensor implementations.

ZOWIE mice with hardware controls

ZOWIE documents button combinations for several series. In its button numbering, Button 1 is the left button, Button 2 the right button, Button 4 the side button toward the front, and Button 5 the side button toward the rear, as shown in its model documentation. The listed combinations are:

  • Lower LOD: Buttons 4 + 1
  • Medium LOD: Buttons 5 + 1
  • Higher LOD: Buttons 4 + 1 + 2

For many procedures, the mouse must be powered off or disconnected, then reconnected or switched on while the relevant buttons are held. Wired, wireless, and model-family procedures differ, so check the guide for the exact mouse before trying a combination (ZOWIE LOD adjustment guide).

Other gaming mice

Some mice expose LOD in configuration software or onboard controls; others do not offer an adjustment. Endgame Gear documents the parameter and warns about problems from settings that are too low, but does not provide one menu path for every model. Use the specific mouse’s software or support documentation rather than assuming the brand shares one control method (Endgame Gear guidance).

How to test your mouse’s LOD

Quick test on your normal surface

  1. Place the mouse on the pad you use for gaming and open a blank desktop or another screen where pointer movement is easy to see.
  2. Put the pointer over a visually precise spot and move the mouse slightly.
  3. Lift the mouse vertically while watching the pointer. Note whether it moves during the lift.
  4. Lower the mouse slowly and notice when tracking resumes.
  5. Repeat in several parts of the pad, then test the setting during normal play, especially if you frequently reposition the mouse.

Approximate spacer test

For a more controlled comparison, use thin spacers of known thickness beneath the mouse feet and move the mouse horizontally. Increase the height gradually until tracking stops, then repeat. This can compare settings on the same mouse and pad, but it is not a laboratory measurement. A card, disc, or paper stack is not precision equipment; the sensor may not sit centrally between the feet; cloth can compress; and different parts of a pad can behave differently. The stopping height and the height at which tracking resumes may also differ.

The UIST paper notes that standardized LOD measurement methodology has been lacking and proposes a repeatable approach (paper PDF). Treat a home test as setup-specific evidence, not a figure that can be compared directly with another mouse’s advertised setting.

How pads, mouse feet, and dirt affect tracking

Pad texture and surface

Surface texture can affect tracking near the cutoff. A rough pad may make a very low setting stutter on some mouse-and-surface combinations; that does not mean every cloth pad causes high LOD or that every hard pad fixes it. Texture, reflectivity, pattern, compression, sensor implementation, calibration, and feet all contribute. Endgame Gear documents a rough-surface tracking issue with a default 1 mm setting and recommends considering a higher LOD (Endgame Gear rough-pad guidance).

Replacement skates

Feet determine how high the mouse body sits above the surface. Thicker or unevenly fitted replacement skates can therefore change the sensor’s relationship to the pad and may cause tracking problems. ZOWIE warns that third-party skates can alter sensor height; for its DW-series mice it lists original skates at approximately 0.5 mm and suggests trying Medium or High LOD if thicker replacements cause tracking issues (ZOWIE skate guidance). That thickness and recommendation are specific to the documented models, not a universal value.

Sensor contamination

Dust or dirt on the sensor lens can mimic an LOD fault. Before changing hardware or assuming the sensor is defective, clean the lens carefully and test the mouse on another surface. ZOWIE’s troubleshooting guidance also includes trying another USB port or computer and testing a different LOD setting (ZOWIE troubleshooting steps).

Troubleshoot common LOD problems

The cursor moves while the mouse is lifted

  • Lower LOD if the mouse offers an adjustment.
  • Test on another pad to see whether the behavior changes with the surface.
  • Lift the mouse higher during repositioning and check whether the movement occurs on the desktop as well as in games.
  • Clean the sensor lens if the behavior persists.

The mouse stutters when lifted slightly

  • Raise LOD to Medium or High and test again.
  • Try a smoother pad; rough texture can cause instability near an extremely low cutoff.
  • Clean the sensor and inspect replacement feet for excess thickness or uneven installation.
  • If the mouse supports both wired and wireless modes, compare them to rule out a connection-related symptom.

Tracking does not resume reliably after the mouse is set down

  • Try Medium or High LOD.
  • Test another pad and clean the sensor.
  • Check the thickness and installation of replacement feet.
  • Try another USB port or computer; consult the manufacturer before reinstalling drivers or changing firmware.

The software has no LOD setting

  • Confirm the exact model and sensor generation; the feature may not be supported.
  • Check whether the model uses onboard button combinations instead of a software slider.
  • Look in advanced or calibration menus and confirm the software and firmware support the mouse.

Should LOD influence a gaming-mouse purchase?

It should be a secondary criterion for most buyers and a more important one for players who frequently lift a low-sensitivity FPS mouse. First choose a shape and weight you can control comfortably, with suitable sensor behavior, clicks, feet, and connectivity. Then consider whether the exact model provides adjustable LOD, whether it offers numerical control or only presets, and whether it separates lift-off from landing thresholds.

  • Prioritize adjustable LOD if you regularly reposition and your current mouse moves the cursor or stutters while lifted.
  • Prefer a model with documented, model-specific controls if you want to change LOD without guesswork.
  • Check compatibility with your pad and any planned replacement feet.
  • Do not buy a mouse solely for a quoted LOD number: a manufacturer’s specification is not necessarily a comparable independent measurement.

If your current mouse tracks reliably on your pad and stops when you lift it, an unspecified or non-adjustable LOD alone is not a reason to replace it.
