Multistreaming means broadcasting the same live program to more than one platform at the same time. It can make a show available to viewers on several services from one production, but it also adds choices about encoding, upload capacity, platform rules, and how each destination displays the stream.

How multistreaming works

YouTube Help defines simulstreaming as going live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time. The key distinction is where the stream gets copied: on your computer, or on a cloud service.

Local multistreaming

Your encoder produces and sends an output to each destination. This gives you direct control of the workflow, but can require additional encoding work and more outbound bandwidth. YouTube identifies capable hardware and greater control as reasons to choose local encoding.

Cloud relay

Your encoder sends one feed to a relay service, which distributes it to your selected platforms. YouTube describes this as sending one high-quality stream to a cloud service for onward distribution. It can reduce the number of outbound feeds from your computer, but adds a service dependency and may involve a subscription; some services offer limited no-cost plans.

Browser-based studio

A hosted studio combines production tools and distribution in a browser-based workflow. StreamYard describes a studio with direct platform integrations and custom RTMP destinations, consolidated comments, and landscape and portrait streaming. This can suit shows that prioritize guest participation and integrated production over keeping a local encoder workflow.

Choose a workflow that fits your setup

Approach How it works Useful when Trade-offs to check
Local encoder with separate outputs Your computer encodes and sends streams to the destinations. You want direct control and have hardware and network capacity for the workload. CPU/GPU load, combined outbound bitrate, encoder configuration, and stream keys.
Local encoder plus cloud relay Your encoder sends one feed to a service that distributes it onward. You want to keep an encoder such as OBS while reducing local outbound feeds, especially with several destinations or a less powerful computer. Supported services, destination caps, subscription cost, another service dependency, per-platform setup, and policy compliance.
Browser-based studio A hosted studio produces the show and sends it to multiple services. Guest participation and integrated comments matter more than maintaining a local encoder workflow. Browser and device needs, plan limits, price, layout controls, and supported platforms.

Compare tools by destination support and caps, local CPU/GPU and bandwidth demands, aspect-ratio handling, guest and production features, cross-platform chat, price, and each platform’s rules. Vendor features and plan terms can change, so confirm them before choosing.

Plan your upload bandwidth and encoding

For direct local outputs, add the target bitrates for all destinations, then leave upload headroom. YouTube’s illustrative example is a 6 Mbps stream plus a 4 Mbps stream, for a 10 Mbps combined target. It recommends upload bandwidth of 1.5–2 times that combined target for stability—15–20 Mbps in this example. This is planning guidance, not a guarantee that a given connection or stream will be stable.

  1. List the outputs. Record the target bitrate for each destination and add them together if your setup sends separate feeds.
  2. Check your connection under realistic conditions. Run a speed test when your network is being used as it normally will be; leave headroom above the combined target rather than planning around the best-case result.
  3. Check encoder and platform requirements. Configure each output for the destination’s current ingest settings and confirm the correct stream key and RTMP server URL where required.
  4. Monitor stream health while live. Watch each destination’s stream-health indicators; one platform can have problems even if another looks normal.

A relay changes the creator-side upload calculation because your computer sends one feed to the service, which distributes it onward. It does not remove every bandwidth, quality, or workload constraint: the ingest bitrate, connection quality, destination requirements, and your computer’s production workload still matter. Restream says its OBS relay avoids a separate local encode and added upload stream per destination; treat that as a vendor description, not an independent performance benchmark.

Confirm platform eligibility and rules

YouTube readiness and stream limits

YouTube’s live-streaming help page, accessed in 2026, says a channel must be verified and live streaming enabled; the creator must be at least 16 and have no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. It lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at once. YouTube also says enabling live streaming for the first time can take at least 24 hours. These are platform rules as listed on the page when accessed; check the official guidance again before a scheduled event.

For other channels, YouTube’s instructions say to use accounts in good standing and obtain each platform’s stream key and RTMP server URL where the encoder needs them. Keep stream keys private: they authorize a stream to the associated channel.

Check every destination’s simulcasting policy

Do not assume one platform’s permission covers another. Twitch’s simulcasting guidance says Twitch may not be used to direct viewers to a concurrent stream elsewhere. Its examples include links or prompts in profile material, banners, QR codes, broadcast titles, go-live notifications, and chat commands. Review the current Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ and the rules for every other destination before promoting or configuring a simulcast.

Account for horizontal and vertical viewing

YouTube Live Control Room can provide horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions at the same time. YouTube says viewers use one shared live URL and chat, and vertical streams may appear in the Shorts feed. The vertical layout can be center-cropped or otherwise adjusted; a crop that works for a talking head may cut off game UI, overlays, or other important content.

Examples of multistreaming tools

These are product descriptions, not independent performance tests. Check current platform support, pricing, and plan limits directly before committing to a workflow.

Restream with OBS

Restream’s OBS guide describes connecting channels, connecting OBS to Restream, and starting the broadcast from OBS. Restream says its relay distributes the stream without a separate local encode or additional local upload stream per destination, and describes unified chat and aggregated analytics. Those are vendor-stated capabilities, not a benchmark guarantee.

StreamYard studio

StreamYard describes a browser-based studio with direct platform integrations, custom RTMP options, consolidated comments, and landscape and portrait streaming. When its page was accessed in 2026, it listed one destination on Free, three on Core, and up to eight on Advanced and Teams; it also listed a paid starting price of $20/month for new users in the first year when billed annually. These terms are time-sensitive: verify the current plan page before subscribing.

Common problems and fixes

  • One or more destinations drop or stutter: For direct outputs, compare your connection’s available upload capacity with the combined target bitrate and add headroom. If using a relay, check the single ingest feed and the destination’s health status separately.
  • The encoder or game becomes overloaded: Multiple local encodes can increase CPU/GPU demand. Reduce production load or consider a workflow that sends one feed to a relay; confirm what the service supports and remember it adds a dependency.
  • A destination does not receive the stream: Recheck that the correct channel account is connected and that its stream key and RTMP server URL match the destination. If a key was replaced, update the encoder or relay configuration.
  • One platform rejects the broadcast: Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming, check its current ingest requirements, and review restrictions or policy notices for that account.
  • Vertical viewers see a poor crop: Reframe scenes and overlays for 9:16 before the broadcast, or prepare a suitable vertical composition rather than relying on a center crop of the horizontal picture.
  • A platform objects to cross-promotion: Review its current simulcasting rules and remove prohibited prompts, links, or calls to action from titles, profiles, notifications, and chat.
