The right method depends on platform support, account eligibility, your upload capacity, and each service’s rules.
What multistreaming means
YouTube calls simultaneous broadcasts of the same content on multiple platforms “simulstreaming.” Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ describes simulcasting, or multistreaming, as broadcasting the same stream to multiple platforms at once. The terms are commonly used for this shared-content workflow.
For example, a gaming creator might send one live show to YouTube and Twitch together. Viewers can watch on their preferred platform, but multistreaming does not guarantee more viewers or revenue; it simply makes the same program available in more places.
Choose how to send the stream
Send separate outputs from your encoder
In this approach, your streaming setup sends an output to each platform. It can offer direct control over each destination, but the exact configuration depends on your encoder and platform support. The platform guidance cited here does not establish a universal OBS setup or quantify the extra local encoding and upload capacity this method may require. Check current documentation for your encoder and destinations before configuring it.

Send one feed through a cloud relay
A relay accepts one incoming stream from your encoder and forwards it to selected destinations. This can consolidate distribution, but it makes you dependent on the relay’s current destination support, plan limits, and service behavior. Restream describes account connection or entering its stream key in OBS, selecting destination channels, and starting the stream from OBS in its OBS multistreaming guide. Restream also describes centralized chat and aggregated analytics as product features; these are vendor-described benefits, not guarantees about any creator’s results.
Restream and OBS: a documented example
- Create or sign in to a Restream account and connect the channels you intend to use.
- In OBS, choose Restream as the service or enter the Restream stream key. Restream also documents an account-connection option.
- Confirm the intended destinations are selected in Restream.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check each destination to confirm the broadcast is arriving as expected.
Restream’s Twitch and YouTube example documents this type of workflow. Treat the steps as the service’s instructions, not as an independently tested setup; interfaces and available integrations can change.

Check eligibility, rules, and connection capacity first
Before choosing a workflow, confirm that every account and destination is eligible and that the selected method is supported. YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms says the channel must be verified with live streaming enabled. It notes that enabling a first live stream can take at least 24 hours after the initial request. Other services also need to be active and in good standing.
- Get the connection details: Depending on your encoder and destination, you may need a stream key or an RTMP server URL. An account integration may handle connection details instead.
- Check platform policies and agreements: A service may restrict simultaneous broadcasting or an agreement may require exclusivity.
- Check upload capacity against your configuration: YouTube says sufficient upload speed is critical for high-quality simulstreaming. The required capacity depends on stream settings and workflow; no single numeric target is established here, so do not assume one figure fits every setup.
- Test destinations before going public: Run a private or otherwise appropriate test event and verify the stream at each platform, including audio and video.
Follow Twitch’s simulcasting rules
Twitch’s current Simulcasting Guidelines apply unless you have an agreement requiring exclusivity. Twitch says creators must not degrade the Twitch viewing experience compared with other services. Its examples include shrinking the Twitch video or otherwise making its quality worse. The guidelines also say Twitch may not be used to drive users to a live stream on another service. Review the policy itself before broadcasting, since rules and agreements can change.

Do not confuse simulcasting with Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting. Twitch describes Enhanced Broadcasting with Multiple Encodes as supporting multiple client-side encodes and relating to Dual Format and 2K streaming. That is a separate feature from distributing the same program to several independent platforms.
What multistreaming can and cannot do for a gaming creator
Potential benefits
- One live program can be available to viewers who prefer different platforms.
- A cloud relay can centralize some distribution tasks instead of requiring a separate destination setup for every output.
- Depending on the service, chat or analytics may be consolidated. Restream describes these capabilities for its product; check current plan details and destination compatibility.
Trade-offs to weigh
- More destinations mean more policy checks: Eligibility, exclusivity, and presentation requirements can differ by platform.
- A relay adds a dependency: Its destinations, limits, and service behavior matter to the broadcast.
- Direct outputs require configuration research: Encoder support, local encoding demands, and upload requirements depend on your particular setup; the sources cited here do not provide a benchmark for comparing methods.
- Feature availability can change: Restream currently says its free offering allows users to choose two of more than 30 social channels, and its product page advertises more than 30 platforms. These are Restream’s own plan and product claims, not independently verified performance results. Check its live pricing and multistreaming pages for current availability before relying on them.
A practical pre-broadcast checklist
- List the platforms where you intend to broadcast, then confirm each account is eligible and in good standing.
- Check each platform’s current simulcasting, exclusivity, and content rules.
- Choose direct encoder outputs or a cloud relay based on current support for your destinations and settings.
- Collect each required stream key or RTMP URL, unless an account integration supplies the connection.
- Confirm your upload capacity is suitable for the chosen configuration using current technical guidance for your encoder and platforms.
- Test the event in an appropriate non-public mode and inspect every destination before the public broadcast.
