It is not simply an upscaler or a frame-generation mode. As of October 5, 2026, NVIDIA names NBA 2K27 as the supported game: play locally on a GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop or laptop GPU, or stream it through GeForce NOW Ultimate on NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080-powered rigs.
What DLSS 5 does
NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, describing it as a real-time neural-rendering model intended to bring photorealistic lighting and materials to games. The company says the feature can add effects such as subsurface scattering on skin, sheen on fabric, and more complex interaction between light and hair. These are NVIDIA’s product claims, not independently measured image-quality results. NVIDIA’s announcement
DLSS 5 is distinct from the company’s earlier DLSS functions for resolution upscaling and frame generation. Its stated aim is visual fidelity; the available descriptions do not establish that it increases frame rates.
How NVIDIA says the technology works
NVIDIA says DLSS 5 takes a rendered frame’s color and motion vectors and uses the game’s 3D content to guide its neural-rendering output. In its September technical description, the company says the engine-rendered frame, artist-authored geometry, textures, and lighting buffers form the foundation. It also says that richer source lighting, including ray-traced or path-traced lighting, can improve the accuracy of the result. NVIDIA Developer Blog

NVIDIA describes a one-frame-in, one-frame-out pipeline that processes frames locally on a single RTX 50 Series GPU at up to 4K. The company says this design is intended to produce deterministic, temporally stable output. Those are design descriptions; no independent benchmark for frame rate, latency, visual improvement, or GPU cost is established here.
Which games support DLSS 5?
As of October 5, 2026, NVIDIA’s September 22 developer post names NBA 2K27 as available with DLSS 5. Visual Concepts developed the game, and 2K published it. NVIDIA says the implementation uses overall tone and style controls plus a per-pixel uplift control mask to enhance character detail while respecting scanned facial geometry.

NVIDIA’s March announcement listed other games, including Starfield, Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as expected to receive the feature. That was a list of planned support at announcement, not confirmation that those games have DLSS 5 enabled now. Bethesda’s Todd Howard said at the time that the studio intended to bring DLSS 5 to Starfield and future Bethesda titles; that statement described a plan, not current availability. What graphics card or service do you need?
For local play, NVIDIA currently specifies a GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop or laptop GPU. The company’s announcement and September technical post describe operation at up to 4K, but do not provide an independent performance benchmark or establish a frame-rate outcome.

NVIDIA’s September 3 FAQ search-result text calls DLSS 5 its most computationally demanding model to date and says the company plans to work on expanding official support to RTX 40 Series after further tuning for RTX 50 Series performance. Can DLSS 5 change how characters look?
Yes, changing lighting and material detail can affect a character’s appearance; the unresolved question is whether the result suits a game’s intended art direction. NVIDIA says developers can choose among models, adjust Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity, apply semantic AI masks, and use engine-level masks for particular asset groups. The company presents those controls as a way to decide what changes and where the effect applies. NVIDIA Developer Blog
Some viewers criticized the March announcement demos, saying characters looked substantially different or over-polished and that the changes seemed to weaken the original artistic intent. The Associated Press reported both the criticism and NVIDIA’s position that developers have detailed artistic control. The examples sparked a debate about the feature’s look and use; they do not establish how every implementation in a shipping game will behave. Associated Press report
