It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game rendered internally at a lower resolution, with the aim of preserving detail and image stability. Sony says the system analyzes game images pixel by pixel; it does not publish the full technical design behind that process.
What does PSSR do?
Games do not always render every frame at the same resolution as the image sent to a TV. A game may render internally at a lower resolution to manage its graphics workload, then use an upscaler to reconstruct a higher-resolution output. PSSR is Sony’s AI-driven system for doing that on PS5 Pro.
In Sony’s February 27, 2026 description, PS5 and PS5 Pro Lead Architect Mark Cerny called PSSR “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” Here, AI means machine-learning-based image reconstruction in the console’s graphics pipeline—not a chatbot or a tool for generating artwork.
How does PSSR work?
- The game renders an image internally. Its internal rendering resolution can be lower than the final display output, which can help balance visual quality and performance.
- PSSR reconstructs an upscaled image. Its learned image-reconstruction system analyzes image pixels and produces a higher-resolution result intended to retain detail and stability. Sony’s March 2026 description says the latest version makes reconstruction more precise and improves motion stability.
Sony has not publicly specified the complete reconstruction pipeline, the model’s training process or data, its size, or exactly which image buffers and motion inputs it uses. It is therefore more accurate to describe PSSR as a pixel-aware reconstruction system than as a simple sharpening filter applied to a finished screenshot.

Original PSSR and the upgraded version
Sony introduced PSSR with PS5 Pro at the console’s November 7, 2024 launch, describing it as AI-driven upscaling based on machine learning. On February 27, 2026, Cerny announced an upgraded version, saying it takes a “very different approach” to both the neural network and the overall algorithm. Sony connects that work to Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD, and said the co-developed technology had also been used in AMD FSR 4 before a further six months of refinement for the upgraded PSSR.

Sony’s statements describe intended capabilities, not a universal improvement or a guaranteed numerical gain in every scene. Game-specific results depend on implementation.

Does PSSR make games run at native 4K?
Not necessarily. Upscaling can produce a higher-resolution output from a lower internal rendering resolution, but that does not mean the game rendered every pixel natively at the output resolution. PSSR also does not guarantee a particular frame rate, image-quality improvement, or resolution in every supported game. The game’s own settings and implementation matter.
Which PS5 Pro games support PSSR?
Sony reported on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is Sony’s count as of that date, not a live compatibility total.

In its March 16, 2026 announcement about the upgraded version, Sony listed titles using or adopting it including Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Nioh 3, and Rise of the Ronin. Sony also identified Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077 for support or forthcoming patches at that time. Support can change through game updates, so check a game’s current PS5 Pro feature information rather than treating an announcement list as definitive.
A developer example: 007 First Light
IO Interactive said upgraded PSSR is enabled by default in 007 First Light on PS5 Pro. In a May 19, 2026 account, the studio described less shimmering and flicker, better temporal stability during motion, and clearer reconstruction of hair and fine detail. Those are IO Interactive’s observations about its game, not independent measurements or a promise of the same results in other titles.

How to enable upgraded PSSR for games you already own
Sony’s March 2026 announcement says PS5 Pro users can select Enhance PSSR Image Quality in the console’s settings to apply the upgraded system-level enhancement to supported games. The effect is limited to games that support PSSR; it does not add compatibility to every installed title. Sony cautions that results vary by game and that unexpected visual effects may occur, in which case the enhancement can be switched off.
Is PSSR available on the standard PS5?
PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for the standard PS5 describes a separate “performance tier” of AI upscaling, not a release or renaming of PSSR for base PS5. Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural network and a hand-tuned implementation to fit the standard console’s performance limits. The announcement does not establish that PSSR itself runs on standard PS5.

What PSSR is not
- Not native rendering: an upscaled output may be reconstructed from a lower internal resolution.
- Not universal game support: the feature depends on title support and, for upgraded PSSR, the relevant game implementation or system option.
- Not a guaranteed visual or performance result: clarity, stability, and any visual side effects can differ by game.
- Not the same product as AMD FSR 4 or QSSR: Sony links the upgraded PSSR to Project Amethyst and says related co-developed technology was used in FSR 4, but that does not establish product identity or universal compatibility. QSSR is Sony’s separate offering for base PS5.
