Sony announced the China Hero Project in July 2016 to help China-based developers make games for PlayStation and reach audiences at home and abroad. It is a developer-support initiative—not a game or console—and Sony was still describing it as active in 2024, when it said the program had reached its third phase.
What Sony announced in 2016
The China Hero Project was introduced at a PlayStation press conference in China as an initiative by Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia. Its aim was to identify Chinese development teams and help them build games for PlayStation, strengthen their position in China, and pursue wider international reach. Sony later described the program as launched in 2016. The July 2016 announcement and Sony’s 2023 overview establish the launch and purpose.
The name refers to the umbrella program. Individual games are projects selected for support, while later phases represent subsequent rounds of developer support. A 2017 announcement publicized 10 works associated with the initiative; it was not the program’s launch. The 2017 announcement gives that early example.
Why the initiative matters to PlayStation
Sony’s China-focused development effort followed the PS4’s official Chinese launch in 2015. Rather than depending only on games developed elsewhere, the program gave PlayStation a way to cultivate local teams and bring distinctive China-developed titles to its audience. Sony presents its goal as developing local talent and helping games reach broader audiences, not guaranteeing a particular commercial outcome. The China initiative also sits within a wider family of Sony “Hero Project” efforts, which later included programs for India and the Middle East and North Africa. What support does the China Hero Project offer?
The support is a mix of development assistance and help navigating the route to market. Sony’s public description does not promise the same package to every participant.
- Development and production guidance: Sony’s Shanghai-based production team can provide code reviews, recommendations, and guidance from PlayStation staff.
- Funding: Sony says it provides funding toward development of key titles. It does not publish a standard amount or say that every selected game receives identical funding.
- Technical and production services: The PlayStation page identifies support partners for areas including Unreal Engine, middleware, quality assurance, audio, game development, and haptic-vibration production. Named partners include Epic Games, CRIWARE, Digital Hearts, Vanguard Sound, Sound Machine, Virtuos, and Richtap.
- Publishing connections: Sony helps developers identify, connect with, and select publishing partners in Asia and other regions. That is not the same as Sony publishing every participant’s game.
- Marketing: Participants can draw on PlayStation marketing resources to improve visibility with players and business partners.
These categories come from the PlayStation China Hero Project page. The page describes a support network, not a universal financing or publishing contract.

How Sony evaluates developers and games
PlayStation says the project is not limited to one genre. Its stated considerations include production quality, visual design, gameplay, and narrative. Sony primarily evaluates a playable vertical slice, game-design documents, and the submitting company and team. In practical terms, this is a selective development program: a studio should be prepared to show a meaningful playable portion of its game and explain how its team can deliver it.

PlayStation’s Singapore project page separates games it highlights from titles it lists as in production. The status below reflects that page; regional listings can vary and may change as Sony updates them.

The Singapore page is the source for these examples and its stated production status. Dusk Diver also appears on some regional project pages, including PlayStation’s mainland-China page.
Lost Soul Aside is another widely recognized project associated with the initiative and illustrates how a game can grow beyond an early concept. Its association with the program should not be taken to mean that China Hero Project games are automatically or permanently PlayStation-exclusive; platform plans need to be checked for each title.

From launch to later phases
The program’s timeline distinguishes its 2016 launch from later public updates. Sony’s 2023 ChinaJoy account said the PlayStation booth displayed around 30 first-party and partner titles, including six games representing the China Hero Project. In 2024, Sony said the initiative had reached its third phase and linked it to efforts to bring more PS5 games to Chinese players and global audiences. Those updates show that the project continued beyond its initial announcement; they do not establish that every supported game had shipped. See Sony’s 2023 update and 2024 ChinaJoy update.

- Support does not guarantee a game will be completed, released, successful, or distributed worldwide.
- Funding is described as support for key titles; Sony does not publish a universal grant amount or financing formula.
- Publishing assistance can mean help finding a partner, rather than publication by Sony.
- Association with PlayStation does not by itself establish platform exclusivity. Confirm platform plans title by title.
- A game’s appearance on a project page or showcase does not establish its final release date.
How developers can contact Sony
The current PlayStation project page lists [email protected] as the contact for interested developers. The public page does not specify a fixed application calendar, a standard funding amount, or a response timeline, so the listed email is a contact route—not confirmation that applications are continuously open in every territory.
