QSSR—Quick Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s AI upscaling feature announced for PS5. It is designed as a lower-computation performance tier, while PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—remains Sony’s higher-tier upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. Sony has described image-detail and stability improvements for QSSR, but has not published a matched test or quantified comparison proving how it stacks up against PSSR.
What QSSR does on PS5
Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, as a way to bring AI-guided image upscaling to PS5. Sony says PSSR’s computational demands had previously made it impossible to bring that experience to the console. QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5.
Upscaling reconstructs an image for display from a lower-resolution source. Sony describes PSSR as analyzing game images pixel by pixel and using AI to upscale them. QSSR is intended to provide a similar kind of AI-guided reconstruction within PS5’s performance constraints. Sony says it can improve image detail and stability, but its announcement gives no resolution targets, frame-time cost, image-quality measurements, or controlled before-and-after results. Sony’s QSSR announcement presents those improvements as qualitative claims.
QSSR vs. PSSR
| Comparison | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Quick Spectral Super Resolution | PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution |
| Console Sony associates it with | PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Sony’s description | A new performance tier of AI upscaling, designed for PS5 | An AI library that analyzes game frames pixel by pixel while upscaling; Sony calls it the gold standard on PS5 Pro |
| Sony’s stated image benefits | Improved detail and stability | The upgraded version aims for more precise reconstruction, improved motion stability, clearer fine details, and developer flexibility |
| Published direct comparison | No matched QSSR-versus-PSSR benchmark is provided in the cited Sony announcements | |
The distinction is about the tier and console Sony has announced for each feature, not a published score showing one is a certain percentage faster or sharper. In a March 2026 update, Sony described upgraded PSSR as improving image stability and fine detail while giving developers more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. Sony also noted that results vary by title and that players can turn off the optional image-quality enhancement if they encounter unexpected visual effects. That update does not compare PSSR directly with QSSR.

Which games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games, saying both were being patched on October 1, 2026, to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony said QSSR would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but did not publish a complete future support list. Check a game’s current patch notes for later additions; the announcement does not establish that every PS5 game uses QSSR.
For PSSR context, Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement cited support or planned adoption for titles including SILENT HILL 2, SILENT HILL f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Sony said Crimson Desert would use the upgraded version at launch, with patches planned in the coming weeks for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077. This is a dated announcement list, not a live compatibility database.

What the PS5 Pro PSSR setting changes
Sony said PS5 Pro owners can enable Enhance PSSR Image Quality in system settings for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. The setting is optional, and results may vary by title. Sony’s announcement describes it as a PSSR setting for PS5 Pro; it does not say that it applies to QSSR on standard PS5.

Sony calls PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro and describes QSSR as a performance tier for PS5. Those labels explain Sony’s positioning, but they are not a controlled comparison. The cited announcements do not establish a measured image-quality winner, a specific performance difference, or how the features compare in the same game scene.

Sony Interactive Entertainment said in its February 27, 2026, PSSR announcement that the feature had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date. That figure applies to PSSR as of that announcement; it is not a count of QSSR-supported games. Sony’s announcement provides that dated figure.
A meaningful direct comparison would need the same game and scene, with output conditions held constant. It would also need to examine fine-detail reconstruction, flicker or stability in motion, visual artifacts, frame-rate behavior, and whether the game exposes either feature as an option. Sony’s cited posts do not provide those matched tests, so claims that QSSR is a particular amount faster or that PSSR is a particular amount sharper are not established.
