Push VOD usually means that prepared video or other files are sent into a delivery system and pushed toward receiving equipment or an application so they can be used later. The term is context-dependent: it is not the same as a viewer requesting an on-demand video over the web, and it is not the same as “push” in live-stream publishing, where an encoder sends a live feed to a platform.
What “push VOD” means
In a broadcast-oriented context, such as the DVB-NIP use case discussed in Eutelsat’s DVB-NIP white paper, push-style VOD involves ingesting prepared content into a system that distributes it toward receiver-side equipment or an application. A viewer can then select that content for playback later.
That description is not a universal definition or a fixed product specification. The exact distribution schedule, where files are stored, how a catalogue is presented, and whether a return internet connection is needed depend on the particular service and deployment. The cited white paper discusses server-side content-management and ingest functions alongside client-side push-VOD applications, but it does not certify a universal receiver or workflow.
How a push-style VOD workflow works
- Prepare and ingest content. A service operator selects files and loads them into a content-management or ingest system.
- Distribute the content. The system pushes files toward, or makes them available to, the receiving equipment or application. A cited motivation for this approach is delivery when continuous connectivity is unavailable or inefficient; this is a use-case rationale, not a guarantee of speed or reliability.
- Store or expose the content at the receiving end. The receiver or application makes the delivered content available. The storage location and retention behavior are deployment-specific.
- Choose and play it later. The user selects prepared content for playback when wanted. The catalogue and playback experience depend on the implementation.
These steps describe the general shape, not a compatibility checklist. The available description does not establish that every push-VOD system uses the same delivery schedule, storage arrangement, catalogue, or device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How it differs from ordinary HTTP video on demand
With conventional HTTP VOD, the viewer’s compatible player requests video data for playback. The asset is typically encoded and packaged into segments, with a playlist or manifest describing those segments; the files are hosted on a web server or content delivery network. This is a different delivery path from broadcast-style push toward receiver equipment.
| Aspect | Push-style VOD | HTTP VOD, including HLS or DASH |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery path | Content is ingested and pushed toward, or made available to, receiver-side equipment or an application. | A compatible player requests packaged video data over HTTP. |
| Connectivity assumption | A cited motivation is a situation where continuous connectivity is unavailable or inefficient; the actual requirements vary by deployment. | Playback uses HTTP delivery. Apple describes HLS as adapting playback to network conditions through multiple bitrate variants. |
| Storage and catalogue | Where content is stored, how long it remains, and how it appears in a catalogue depend on the deployment. | Packaged segments and manifests are hosted for player access; the hosting arrangement varies. |
| Receiver or player | Requires equipment or an application compatible with that specific implementation; a universal receiver is not established. | Requires a player compatible with the applicable streaming format. |
| Content type | Prepared content is delivered for later use. | HLS and MPEG-DASH can support both on-demand video and live streaming. |
Apple’s HLS overview describes HLS support for live and prerecorded video, multiple bitrate variants, and adaptation to network conditions. Its HLS workflow guide explains the segment-and-playlist approach. AWS also describes segment and manifest delivery for on-demand streaming through CloudFront. These are descriptions of HTTP streaming, not evidence that those services provide DVB-NIP push VOD.

Push VOD is not the same as “push” live streaming
In live-stream publishing, “push” often means sending a live audio-and-video feed from a host or encoder to cloud servers. Tencent Cloud’s guide to push, live streaming, and VOD distinguishes that live contribution from VOD, where stored video is played later. The shared word does not make live-stream push and broadcast-oriented push VOD the same process: one sends a live feed for distribution, while the other delivers prepared content for later use.
How MPEG-DASH fits in
MPEG-DASH is an HTTP-based adaptive streaming approach for live and on-demand video. Like HLS, it belongs to the family of player-requested HTTP delivery methods; it is not another name for broadcast push VOD. The MPEG standards overview describes the DASH standard.

What to verify before choosing a push-VOD service or device
- Implementation compatibility: confirm that the receiver, gateway, or application supports the specific service and standard implementation. Do not assume a device described broadly as a video receiver will work.
- Delivery and connectivity: ask how files reach the receiver, whether a continuous connection is required, and what happens if connectivity is intermittent.
- Storage and updates: establish where content is stored, how long it remains available, and how additions or catalogue changes reach users.
- Playback experience: check how users browse, select, and play delivered content, and which devices or applications are supported.
- Architecture fit: distinguish a broadcast push deployment from HTTP VOD using HLS or DASH. Similar outcomes—watching a prepared video later—do not mean the delivery systems are interchangeable.
The cited material does not establish a consumer device that works across all push-VOD deployments, nor does it provide a measured performance comparison between push delivery and HTTP VOD. Request compatibility and service details for the specific implementation rather than relying on the label alone.

That is a different task from broadcast push VOD. For a YouTube channel that should continuously play uploaded recordings as a live stream, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running on a home computer; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
