Ren’Py is a free, open-source engine for making visual novels and other text-led interactive stories. You write scenes and dialogue in its script language, use the desktop launcher to manage and run a project, and can add Python for more involved game logic. It supports desktop and mobile releases; web export is available in beta.

How a Ren’Py project comes together
The Ren’Py launcher is the main desktop tool for creating, managing, editing, and running projects. Creators typically write scenes and dialogue in Ren’Py’s readable script language, then test the project through the launcher. The official quickstart introduces the workflow with a small example, covering script, dialogue, scenes, menus, and project management. Python is available when a game needs more specialized logic than the script language provides.
Platforms and storefronts
The official platform list covers Windows 10 and later, macOS 10.10 and later, Linux on x86_64 and Arm, Android 5.0 and later, and iOS 11 and later. Ren’Py’s Build Distributions tools can prepare desktop packages and market-oriented packages for services such as Steam and itch.io. The tools support packaging; creators still need to follow each storefront’s own submission and release requirements. Ren’Py’s platform documentation lists supported targets, and its build documentation explains distribution options.

Is Ren’Py free for commercial use?
Yes. The project says Ren’Py is open source and free for commercial use. Its license permits using, copying, modifying, publishing, distributing, sublicensing, and selling the software, subject to the license’s conditions. The engine and bundled dependencies may be covered by their own licenses, so check the current license information when preparing a release or redistributing components.
What to know about web export
Ren’Py offers HTML5/WebAssembly export in beta through the launcher’s “Web (Beta)” section. The web port does not support multithreading: projects that use renpy.invoke_in_thread() or Python’s threading module will need changes for this target. Treat web as a platform to test specifically, including performance and any features your game depends on, rather than assuming desktop behavior will carry over unchanged. Which projects suit Ren’Py?
Ren’Py is a strong starting point when the core of a game is authored scenes, dialogue, choices, and character-focused storytelling. Before choosing it for a project with substantial custom systems or several release targets, consider how much Python or bespoke code those systems require, what flexibility you need for 2D presentation and UI, and whether the desktop, mobile, or beta web build fits your release plan. For comparisons with other engines, storefront packaging and licensing obligations are also practical factors.
