RuneScape Reignited was announced as a fresh-start character type inside the existing RuneScape game—not as a separate MMO. Jagex’s original plan gave Reignited characters their own progression, economy and hiscores while letting them play in the same worlds as Veteran characters. On October 6, 2026, Jagex said it was re-evaluating the plan after player feedback, so its original rules, membership terms and timing should be treated as provisional.

What is RuneScape Reignited?

Reignited is the name Jagex gave to a proposed new character type for RuneScape. Its intended appeal was a clean start: new and returning players could progress alongside others beginning from the same point, rather than entering an established game economy shaped by years of play.

That distinction matters: the announcement did not describe a new standalone MMO or a replacement edition of RuneScape. It described a separate route for creating and progressing a character within the existing game. PC Gamer likewise described it as a new character type in RuneScape 3, not an upgraded version of the classic game (PC Gamer, October 4, 2026).

How the original proposal differed from a Veteran character

Jagex’s first announcement set out two character paths: a Veteran character, carrying existing progress into the established game, and a Reignited character, starting on a new progression path with a separate economy and hiscores. Jagex presented the fresh start as a way to experience RuneScape’s long history without beginning inside a mature economy (Jagex’s original announcement and FAQ).

The original FAQ also said the two economies would not merge on a predetermined schedule. These are details of the first proposal, not confirmed terms for a revised version.

Would Reignited wipe an existing RuneScape account?

The original announcement described a choice for new accounts between creating a Veteran character or a Reignited character. It did not say that existing Veteran progress would be erased. Under that proposal, Reignited was an additional character path with separate progression, not a wipe of existing characters. Jagex’s October 6 update is now reviewing the design, however, and does not settle how a revised character setup will work.

Why did Jagex present Reignited as a relaunch?

Jagex framed Reignited as a fresh entry point for RuneScape, particularly for new and returning players who might find it difficult to join an economy and progression landscape built over many years. The idea landed amid the game’s 25th-anniversary year and a roadmap featuring restoration work across core systems, visual updates, combat, quality-of-life features and new content (Jagex’s 2026 roadmap announcement).

That was Jagex’s rationale for the proposal, not proof that a fresh-start character type would grow the player base or improve the game. The central design question is whether a new progression track can welcome newcomers without making existing players feel that their characters, communities or accomplishments count for less.

Why are RuneScape players concerned?

In its October 6 update, Jagex acknowledged that the original announcement made existing players feel they were no longer the studio’s focus and apologized. The studio said fresh progression and an economy had potential for new and returning players, but that the proposal needed to better recognize Veteran players’ achievements and ensure they benefited from newcomers (Jagex, “Reignited: Where We Go From Here,” October 6, 2026).

Jagex identified several concerns raised by players:

RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg

  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
  • Veteran progress could seem to lose value if attention and activity shifted to the new character type.
  • Veteran worlds could lose population, and the community could become more divided.
  • Restrictions between character types could limit interaction.
  • Cosmetics and items tied to Veteran characters could feel cut off from the new path.
  • Players could feel pressured to restart to take part in the fresh-start experience.
  • A separate membership could mean paying again to play the new character type.

These are concerns about the proposed design, not established outcomes. Jagex said it was exploring substantial revisions, including ways to represent Veteran progress and reduce a hard split between communities.

Would Reignited require a second membership?

Under the original FAQ, Reignited characters would need their own membership. Jagex also offered ten days of members’ content access from December 2 through December 12 after launch. Those were the original announced terms; the October 6 update specifically said Jagex was reviewing separate membership along with other points of friction. It has not established revised membership terms.

What is confirmed about Reignited now?

Jagex’s October 6 statement said, “We are re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited.” The studio planned to present proposals for player feedback by the end of that week, adding that what happened next would depend on the ensuing discussion. That was a stated plan, not confirmation that proposals were subsequently published. The update did not finalize revised mechanics, membership terms or a launch date, so the original proposal should not be treated as a settled description of what will launch.

For players deciding whether the idea suits them, the key factors are whether they want a clean progression start, how much they value existing progress and cosmetics, how separate the economies and character interactions remain, and what membership terms Jagex ultimately sets. Until Jagex publishes final terms, the original announcement is useful for understanding the concept, but not as a final feature list.
