Simulcasting—also called multistreaming—is broadcasting the same live program to multiple platforms at the same time. You can send a separate output from your computer to each platform, or send one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it. The right method depends on your upload capacity, computer, number of destinations, and how much control you want over each platform’s settings.
What simulcasting means
In a simulcast, one live program is available on more than one service at once—for example, on YouTube and Twitch. YouTube describes this as going live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time. (YouTube Help)
There are two common delivery paths:
- Direct from your setup: Your encoder sends a separate output to each destination. This gives you direct control, but your computer and internet connection must handle the work of encoding and delivering those outputs.
- Through a cloud relay: Your encoder sends one feed to a relay, which forwards it to the destinations you configure. This can simplify local setup and is useful when sending to several channels. Cloudflare documents simulcast outputs that can be enabled or disabled; Restream describes multistreaming with OBS through its service. (Cloudflare; Restream)
Simulcasting is a delivery choice, not a promise that every platform will show identical video quality, latency, or features. Each service may have its own account, stream-key, policy, and output requirements.
What you need before going live
- A destination account in good standing. Confirm the current live-streaming requirements for every platform you plan to use.
- YouTube live streaming enabled. Your channel must be verified, and live streaming must be enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Stream details for each service. YouTube’s event setup provides a server URL and stream key. Other platforms may also require their own ingest URL and key; check their current documentation.
- Enough upload capacity. The required bandwidth depends on your settings and whether you send multiple outputs directly or one feed to a relay. There is no single bitrate or upload-speed figure that suits every resolution and delivery method.
- An encoder and working audio/video. YouTube lists equipment such as webcams, external microphones, and headsets for encoder-based streams; these are optional choices, not prerequisites for simulcasting itself.
How to simulcast from a computer
1. Enable YouTube live streaming in advance
In YouTube Studio, complete the channel verification and live-streaming enablement steps before the day of your broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time access to become available. Check each other destination’s live-stream eligibility separately.

2. Create or schedule the YouTube event
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its encoder settings. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the appropriate fields in your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the event. Use the settings for the intended event rather than reusing a key indiscriminately.
3. Choose direct outputs or a relay
- For direct multistreaming, configure your encoder to send an output to each platform. Follow each destination’s current instructions for its ingest URL, key, and stream settings.
- For a relay, send the encoder’s feed to the relay, then authorize or configure each destination there. Confirm which services and outputs the relay currently supports before relying on it.
The local approach offers direct control but increases the load on your computer and connection as you add outputs. YouTube recommends a capable local encoder when you want maximum quality and control; its guidance points to a cloud service for simpler setup, a lighter local workload, or more than two channels. These are selection cues, not a guarantee of performance for a particular setup. (YouTube Help)

4. Set up the video and audio
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your encoder and connection can sustain, and check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. For a direct multi-output setup, make sure your connection has headroom for the combined outgoing traffic. With a relay, your connection sends the feed to the relay, but you still need to meet the relay’s ingest requirements and the destinations’ requirements. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need to choose suitable encoder settings.
5. Test every destination
Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview for picture and sound. If the event is scheduled, YouTube’s instructions say to confirm the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room. Check each other service separately for successful ingest, the correct title and privacy settings, and any platform-specific restrictions. YouTube advises creators to consult the other platforms’ help documentation because their rules may differ.

6. End the stream and check the archive
End the broadcast from the encoder or platform controls as appropriate for your setup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this does not establish the same archive behavior for other services. (YouTube Help)
How to choose between direct streaming and a relay

Before choosing a relay, verify its current platform support, destination limits, terms, and subscription cost. Features and availability can change, and a relay does not make platform-specific policies identical.

YouTube terminology: broadcast and stream
In the YouTube Live Streaming API, a broadcast is the event viewers watch, while a stream is the incoming audio-video feed and its settings. One broadcast binds to exactly one stream, and a stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts. This API relationship concerns YouTube event management; it is not a limit on the number of external platforms a creator can simulcast to. (Google for Developers)

Common simulcasting problems and fixes
- YouTube will not let you start: Confirm that live streaming is enabled and that any first-time enablement period has elapsed; check the event and stream settings in YouTube Studio.
- A destination shows no video: Check that you used that destination’s correct ingest URL and stream key, and that the output is enabled at the encoder or relay.
- The stream is unstable: Check connection stability and available upload headroom against the combined output demand for a direct setup, or the feed and ingest requirements for a relay. Reduce settings if your connection cannot sustain them.
- One platform works but another does not: Check that destination’s ingest status, account eligibility, title or privacy settings, and current platform rules separately.
- YouTube preview appears but viewers cannot see the event: For a scheduled event, confirm the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Unexpected content or interruptions: Verify that the correct event key is in use and has not been exposed. If you suspect a compromised key, replace it using the platform’s current controls.
