Source SDK Base 2007 is a free Steam runtime for older mods built on Valve’s 2007, or original Orange Box, branch of the Source engine. It supplies the compatible engine executable and shared framework a mod needs to run. It is not a conventional game, and installing it alone does not install the complete Source level-editing toolkit.
What the name means
“SDK” means Software Development Kit. In Valve’s Source ecosystem, the term can describe the tools, code and launchers used to make maps, mods and other content. Source SDK Base 2007, however, is the name of a specific Steam application whose main job is runtime support.

Valve’s historical packaging changed over time, which is why “Source SDK” and “Source SDK Base” are often confused. Valve’s documentation distinguishes the branches and tools in its Source 2007 and Source SDK FAQ.
Is Source SDK Base 2007 a game?
No. It does not provide a normal campaign, multiplayer loop, maps or story of its own. It is an engine foundation that another mod can use.

Steam may still show it in your Library or as your current activity. A mod can launch through AppID 218, so Steam reports the base application’s identity rather than the mod’s public title. In that situation:
- Steam displays: Source SDK Base 2007.
- You are usually running: a separate older Source mod or application.
- The base supplies: compatible engine files and shared framework, not necessarily the mod’s content.
The Steam Support entry identifies the product and AppID as Source SDK Base 2007 (AppID 218). AppID metadata can explain the activity label, but it does not prove which mod or game you are actually using; SteamDB’s configuration page is useful reference metadata rather than Valve documentation.
What is it used for?
An older Source mod generally includes its own game-specific files while relying on a compatible Valve engine environment. Source SDK Base 2007 provides that common environment, so players do not need the exact development installation used by the mod’s creators.

Valve’s Steamworks guidance for distributing Source engine games and mods explains that Source mods are based on an official SDK and may be configured around ownership of a relevant Valve base game or framework. A mod’s own instructions always take priority.
Source SDK Base 2007 versus the Source SDK

For development, you may also need Hammer or another editor, VBSP/VVIS/VRAD compilers, game assets and configuration files, source code or a mod framework, and a compatible compiler toolchain. Valve’s historical tool descriptions and launcher behavior are documented in the Source SDK FAQ and May 11, 2010 SDK update notes. The exact location of those tools varies by branch and installation.
Why does Steam install it?
Steam installs or updates Source SDK Base 2007 when a mod needs the 2007 engine branch. The branch originated with The Orange Box and is associated with projects including Half-Life 2: Episode Two, the original mod version of Dear Esther and the 2012 mod version of Black Mesa. Those examples do not mean every Orange Box title or every Source mod is binary-compatible with AppID 218.
The “2007” label identifies the engine branch, not the year a particular mod was released. A project published years later can still target Source 2007. The Valve Developer Community records the branch’s last engine/SDK update as February 1, 2010, so it should be treated as legacy technology: Source 2007 documentation.

Is it free, and do you need to buy anything?
The base application is distributed through Steam without a conventional purchase price. That does not mean every dependent mod is independent of game ownership. Valve’s distribution guidance says Source mods should be based on an official SDK and may require ownership of a relevant base game, depending on how the project is configured and distributed.
Do not assume that owning Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source or another Source title automatically satisfies every mod’s requirements, and do not assume that no purchase is ever needed. Check the mod’s official readme or store page. Valve’s general developer-tool terms and non-commercial limitations are described in the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
Source 2007, 2006, 2009 and 2013: which branch should you use?
Use the branch named by the mod, not simply the newest SDK Base visible in Steam. Source branches can differ in executable behavior, networking, application-binary interfaces, content mounting, entities, shaders and configuration.

Valve’s 2010 launcher update separated the year-based 2006, 2007 and 2009 configurations: Valve SDK update. Source 2013 can be a better starting point for a new project, but migration may require porting code, entities, assets, shaders, tools and configuration. How to install and use it for a mod
- Open Steam and search your Library for Source SDK Base 2007, or use the Steam Support entry for AppID 218.
- Install or update it only if the mod’s documentation specifies the 2007 branch.
- Install the mod using its own installer or instructions.
- Restart Steam if the mod does not appear immediately.
- Launch the mod from its own Library entry, shortcut or documented launcher; launching the base application directly may not start the mod.
Traditional Steam mods commonly use a folder under steamappssourcemods, but installers can use other locations. Steam’s guidance on custom Source content warns that third-party content is not supported by Steam itself: Installing custom Source maps and mods.
Troubleshooting a mod that will not launch
1. Confirm the required branch
Read the mod’s current documentation. If appropriate, inspect its gameinfo.txt and installer configuration. A mod built for Source 2007 will not necessarily run on Source SDK Base 2013.
2. Confirm the base installation
- Check that Source SDK Base 2007 is installed and Steam has finished updating it.
- Use Steam’s file-integrity verification for the application when that option is available.
- Restart Steam after installation or verification.
3. Check the mod directory
- Make sure the mod is not nested one folder too deeply.
- Confirm it is in the location expected by the mod’s instructions.
- Check for
gameinfo.txt, the expectedbindirectory and required DLLs. - Verify that files from another Source branch have not been mixed in.
4. Check dependencies
A project may require a particular Valve game, asset package, redistributable, SDK branch or launcher. Source SDK Base 2007 does not automatically provide all game content.

Old engine code can encounter launch failures, graphical glitches, driver issues or Steam-client quirks on modern systems. These problems are project-specific. For example, a Zombie Panic! Source announcement describes its legacy SDK 2007 build as unsupported and warns of possible graphical and launch issues; that statement should not be generalized to every AppID 218 project: the project announcement.

Can you uninstall it?
Usually, yes, if you do not play or develop a mod that requires the 2007 branch. Check your installed mods first: removing the base can stop compatible projects from launching, and reinstalling it may be necessary later. Uninstalling the base also does not necessarily remove a mod’s own files, nor does it convert that mod to Source 2013.
When is Source SDK Base 2007 the right choice?
- The mod explicitly requests Source SDK Base 2007 or AppID 218.
- The project documentation identifies the Source 2007 or Orange Box branch.
- You need the original behavior, binaries, physics, networking or content expectations of a legacy project.
- You are preserving an older mod rather than beginning a new engine project.
Do not install it merely because Steam lists it under tools, because you own a Source game, or because a guide says “Source SDK” without naming a branch. For new development, investigate a supported later branch or a maintained community derivative only after confirming that your code and content can be ported.
Bottom line
Install Source SDK Base 2007 when a specific mod targets Valve’s 2007 Orange Box branch. It is a free, legacy runtime—not a standalone game, not a universal Source installer and not the complete Hammer-based development suite. Its Steam activity label usually reflects the AppID through which a mod was launched.
