Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Sims 4 Mods folder is for extracted custom content and gameplay mods. Most are .package files; script mods may also contain .ts4script files. Put them in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. Downloaded Sims and lots use the separate Tray folder.
What belongs in the Mods folder?
Put player-created additions that change how the game looks or works in Mods. Custom content (CC) includes items such as hair, clothing, and furniture; gameplay mods alter features or functionality. The files you install are usually .package files. A script mod may include a .ts4script file as well. EA’s installation guidance describes mods and custom content and explains where to place them.
Where is the folder, and what should it contain?
- Open
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. This is the user-data folder, not the game’s installation directory. - If
Modsis missing, create it inside theThe Sims 4folder. - Extract the downloaded archive, then copy the mod’s files into
Mods. Keep related files together and follow the creator’s installation directions. - Leave the
resource.cfgfile in place if the game has created one. The EA Forums installation guide says ordinary subfolder organization does not require editing it.
A downloaded .zip, .rar, or .7z is an archive containing files, not the installed mod itself. Extract it before installing its contents. The EA Forums guide says script mods with .ts4script files must be in Mods or one subfolder beneath it. Package-only mods can be organized up to five folders deep, according to that guide.
What goes in Tray instead?
Files that represent downloaded Sims, households, rooms, or lots belong in the separate Tray folder—not Mods. The EA Forums guide lists these Tray-format extensions:

.blueprint.bpi.hhi.householdbinary.rmi.room.sgi.trayitem
A download can include both Tray files and custom content. Put the Sim or lot files in Tray and any accompanying CC .package files in Mods.
How do you make the game load mods?
- Start The Sims 4 and open
Game Options > Otherfrom the Main Menu. - Turn on
Enable Custom Content and Mods. If you use a script mod, also turn onScript Mods Allowed. - Apply the change and relaunch the game. EA’s installation instructions say a relaunch is needed for mods to become available.
Mods are supported on PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox.

What should you check after a game update?
An update can affect whether a mod still works. Check the creator’s page for compatibility information and follow their instructions to update or remove files. If mods have been turned off, re-enable the relevant settings, restart, and check the game. For troubleshooting, EA’s guidance on mods, updates, and error codes recommends removing mods and testing them in batches to help identify a problem file.

Use creators and sources you trust. EA says it does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific mods or custom content; a file’s presence in the Mods folder does not mean EA has checked it.
