For a standard maximum-level enchanting setup, place 15 qualifying bookshelves around the enchanting table. Put them two blocks laterally from the table, at table height or one block above, and keep the space between shelves and table clear according to your edition’s rules. This reaches the bookshelf cap and makes a level-30 requirement available in the bottom enchanting slot; it does not guarantee a particular enchantment.
Compact 15-bookshelf layout
A compact option uses a 5×5 perimeter around the table. Leave the one-block ring next to the table empty, then omit one perimeter position so the layout has 15 shelves:

Placement rules that determine whether shelves count
- Distance: Each shelf must be two blocks laterally from the table, with the intervening block space between them.
- Height: A shelf can be at the same height as the table or one block higher.
- Clearance: The gap must satisfy the rules for the edition you are playing. The mechanics reference describes Bedrock Edition as requiring the two-high gap between table and shelf to be air. In Java Edition, the check is at the intervening space at bookshelf height, and some replaceable blocks are permitted. Do not assume every small or transparent block behaves the same in both editions.
- Cap: Enchanting calculations count at most 15 bookshelves. Additional shelves do not increase the maximum contribution.
If the bottom option does not show a level-30 requirement, first inspect the active shelf count, their distance and height, and the gap. The displayed level requirement is a useful check that the setup is working.

What the level-30 option does—and does not—mean
The offered enchantment level depends on the number of nearby qualifying bookshelves, capped at 15, and the menu slot selected. With the cap reached, the bottom slot can show a level-30 requirement. That number is the level requirement for the option, not a promise of a named enchantment or the strongest possible version; the result remains random. Minecraft Wiki: Enchanting mechanics
Choosing between a compact build and a decorative room

Both options can reach the same bookshelf cap if 15 shelves qualify. A full decorative wall or extra shelves may change the room’s appearance, but cannot raise the cap.

Adjusting offers by disabling shelves
Using fewer active shelves changes the levels offered, which can help cycle to different options. The mechanics reference describes disabling shelves, including with torches, as one approach. Treat the exact placement as edition-dependent: a torch or other obstruction may interact differently with Java and Bedrock rules, so verify that the intended shelves stop counting by checking the displayed options rather than assuming one universal arrangement.
