What Is the Best GOP Length for Prerecorded Videos in a YouTube Live Stream?

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval for live streams, with a closed GOP where available. Here’s how to convert that interval to frames and troubleshoot warnings.

For a YouTube Live stream, set the outgoing encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds and use a closed GOP when available. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval is 60 frames. This applies to the live stream sent to YouTube; YouTube does not specify a separate live GOP interval for prerecorded source footage.

Recommended GOP length for YouTube Live

Set the encoder sending your stream to YouTube to place a keyframe every 2 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). Treat 4 seconds as the limit, not the target.

Use a closed GOP if your encoder provides that option. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding (Live streaming error messages).

Convert the interval to frames

GOP length is often entered as a number of frames rather than seconds. Multiply the outgoing frame rate by 2 to get the recommended interval in frames:

Outgoing frame rate Frames for a 2-second interval
24 fps 48
30 fps 60
60 fps 120

YouTube gives 60 frames at 30 fps as an example. The 24 fps and 60 fps values above are arithmetic conversions of its 2-second recommendation, not separate YouTube recommendations.

Set the live encoder, not just the source video

The relevant GOP setting is on the encoder output that YouTube ingests. That remains true when the content being played is prerecorded: the published YouTube Live guidance specifies the interval for the live encoder output, not a special interval for prerecorded material. YouTube describes using either software or a standalone hardware encoder to create a live stream (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

If your encoder asks for a GOP size in frames, calculate it from the output frame rate. If it asks for an interval in seconds, enter 2 seconds. Keep the GOP closed or fixed if that option is available, and check it again if you change frame rate; YouTube notes that a frame-rate change may require adjusting keyframe frequency.

Do not confuse live-stream GOP settings with upload encoding

YouTube publishes separate guidance for uploaded video files. For H.264 uploads, it recommends a closed GOP with a GOP of half the frame rate (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings). That upload recommendation is not the live-stream interval rule. For a live stream playing prerecorded content, configure the outgoing live encoder using the 2-second target.

Related live encoder settings

The keyframe target sits alongside, but does not replace, the rest of the live configuration. YouTube’s live settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Its advanced recommendations include progressive scan and two B-frames. Select the settings appropriate to your encoder and stream; these surrounding values do not change the 2-second GOP target.

Troubleshoot keyframe warnings or buffering

  • YouTube says keyframes are arriving too slowly: Check the actual stream ingestion and encoder GOP size. YouTube says ingestion errors can lead to incorrect GOP sizes.
  • The frame rate changed: Recalculate the frame count for a 2-second interval at the new outgoing frame rate, then confirm keyframes still arrive on that schedule.
  • YouTube reports a GOP or transcoding issue: Confirm the encoder is using a closed GOP where possible.
  • The stream buffers: YouTube notes that keyframes not sent often enough can cause buffering. Check whether the encoder is meeting the interval rather than relying only on the configured value.
  • Image quality falls after shortening the GOP: YouTube also warns that a GOP that is too small can reduce image quality. Use its 2-second recommendation instead of making the interval arbitrarily shorter.

For details on these warnings, see YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
