There is no single best hero for every Darkest Dungeon party. For a broadly useful pick focused on control and backline pressure, start with the Plague Doctor. Choose the Hellion for front-rank offense or the Crusader for a flexible mix of damage and utility. The right choice depends on the dungeon, formation, and what the other three heroes already do.
Which hero should you choose?
A Pocket Gamer tier list updated October 5, 2026, for Version 1.6 places the Plague Doctor, Hellion, and Crusader in its top tier. The author also cautions that every hero can work in the right situation and that dungeon needs affect how useful a hero is. Plague Doctor: control and backline pressure
Pick the Plague Doctor when you want a support-oriented hero whose value comes from disrupting enemies and applying damage over time, particularly against the backline. She is the most straightforward all-round recommendation if those tools fill a gap in your party.
Hellion: front-rank offense
Choose the Hellion when the party needs a front-rank offensive specialist with reach. She is not simply a more aggressive substitute for the Plague Doctor: her appeal is bringing damage from a different position and role.

The Crusader offers a broader mix of contributions, including damage, crowd control, HP and stress recovery, and a repositioning option. That range can make him a useful fit when a party needs several kinds of help, rather than one narrowly defined specialty.
How to judge “best” for your party
Darkest Dungeon is about recruiting, training, and leading flawed heroes through dangers such as stress, disease, and famine, so hero choice is one part of managing an expedition—not a standalone character contest. Red Hook Studios’ game description
- Identify the missing job: Decide whether the group needs control, backline reach, front-rank damage, recovery, or repositioning before picking a hero.
- Check formation fit: A hero’s useful actions depend on the rank they occupy and the ranks they can target. A high tier label does not ensure a good fit if the party cannot accommodate that position.
- Account for the dungeon: The tier-list author notes that some heroes perform better in particular dungeons. Treat the destination as part of the decision, not an afterthought.
- Build around the other three heroes: Avoid choosing a second hero for a job the party already covers if that leaves a more important need unfilled.

Yes. Red Hook announced on August 18, 2026, that The Fire’s Edge was live for the original Darkest Dungeon and added the Runaway and Duelist. The developer describes the Duelist as moving between ranks while maintaining Riposte through two combat stances, and the Runaway as using the class-specific Burn mechanic. The announcement says Switch availability follows on August 20, 2026; check your platform and DLC access when considering the full roster. Red Hook Studios: “The Fire’s Edge Available Now!”

These additions widen the set of roles and mechanics to consider, but they do not establish a universal winner. The same practical test still applies: choose the hero whose position and contribution address the needs of the expedition you are building.
