It belongs to the vampire side of the Dawnguard storyline, so it suits a character who has chosen to become a Vampire Lord. That is a roleplay judgment, not a mechanical ranking of every home. If you want a house you build and furnish yourself, Hearthfire is the better fit. If you want an explicitly vampire-themed player home beyond the base game, the mods below are worth a look, but check your Skyrim edition and platform first.
Decide what “best” means for your character
The answer changes with your priority. Most players are weighing one of three things:
- Vampire atmosphere. You want a home that reads as a vampire’s stronghold without extra work.
- Customization. You want to choose the layout and the domestic and crafting features.
- A modded vampire stronghold. You want a vampire-themed home that comes from a community mod.
Castle Volkihar: the thematic default
Bethesda’s description of Dawnguard presents a choice between joining the Dawnguard and becoming a Vampire Lord. Castle Volkihar is tied to the vampire path of that storyline, which is why it gives a vampire character the most narrative weight. Its appeal is the story it carries rather than any feature set that Bethesda’s official material compares against other homes.
Hearthfire: a home you build
Hearthfire lets you buy land and build a home, from a small cottage to a larger compound. Bethesda lists features including an armory, an alchemy laboratory, a stable, and a garden. A vampire character can use these to create a home that feels right for the role, even without the Dawnguard castle. The choice here is between atmosphere that comes built in and a home you shape yourself.

Vampire-themed home mods
Spiderwick Manor
Bethesda has featured Spiderwick Manor as a vampire home mod for Skyrim Special Edition on PC and Xbox, in an article dated October 5, 2022. That date is nearly four years old, so confirm the mod is still listed and works with your version before you install it.
Castle Volkihar Redux
Bethesda Creations lists Castle Volkihar Redux as a player-home mod for Xbox One that requires Dawnguard. Its listing says the mod works whether you side with the Dawnguard or with the vampires, so your faction choice does not limit it. Read the listing for compatibility details before you choose it.

Getting the right edition
If you do not yet own the game or its add-ons, Bethesda’s official edition page says Skyrim Anniversary Edition includes the core game plus Dawnguard and Hearthfire. The included content can vary by platform and storefront, so check the bundle contents before you buy.

Bethesda Support says that in Skyrim PSVR, random vampire attacks on towns and cities do not occur. Attacks outside those areas can still trigger. The one stated exception is an eclipse that you cause with Auriel’s Bow and Bloodcursed Elven Arrows. This applies to PSVR only, so do not assume it holds on other editions.
