There is no single best kart in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. The right choice depends on whether you want top speed, quick acceleration, or a balance of both. For a balanced default, the Parade Kart is the safest pick. For raw top speed, the Koopa King is the strongest candidate. For acceleration, the Koopa Dasher leads. The sections below explain why, and where the evidence for those rankings is thinner than it looks.
How to define “best” in this game
Double Dash!! asks players to choose a kart from three weight classes, and each class trades one strength for another. “Best” therefore only means something once you know which trade-off you want. Three measures matter most: top speed, acceleration and recovery, and weight, which affects how hard a kart is to push around and how well it holds its ground in contact.

The three kart classes
Nintendo’s official Japanese description of the kart classes, at Nintendo’s kart class page, sets out the basic trade-offs. Paraphrased in English:
- Light karts accelerate well but lack top speed.
- Medium karts are comparatively balanced, with stable speed and acceleration.
- Heavy karts are strong in speed and power but slower to accelerate.
This is the most reliable framework in the game. Any ranking of individual karts should be read against it.

What the displayed ratings show
The Super Mario Wiki’s summary of the in-game star ratings, on its Mario Kart Double Dash page, gives the following values for the three karts most often named in this debate. These are the stars displayed in the game as summarized by that wiki. They are not numerical stats published by Nintendo, and the wiki’s page is the only source for the unlock details below.

Read the table as a map of trade-offs, not as a scoreboard. A kart with five speed stars and one acceleration star will feel very different from one with four and three, but the stars do not measure how much faster or slower either one is.

Picking a kart by priority
Balanced default: Parade Kart
The Parade Kart is the most even option in the displayed ratings. It sits at 4 for speed, 3 for acceleration and 4 for weight, so it avoids the extreme weaknesses of the specialist karts. Because it can be used with any character weight class, it also gives you the most freedom in pairing. Its cost is that it is unlocked late, by winning Mirror All Cup Tour, so new players will likely start with other options.
Top speed: Koopa King
The Koopa King posts the highest displayed speed and weight at 5 each, and the GameFAQs guide cited below identifies it among the fastest karts. Its acceleration is only 1 star, so it is slow to get going and needs room to build speed. It suits players who can control a long run and who do not mind losing ground off the line.

Acceleration: Koopa Dasher
The Koopa Dasher has the highest displayed acceleration at 4 stars, and the same GameFAQs guide identifies it as the best kart for acceleration. The trade-off is 2 stars each for speed and weight. It is a good choice for tight tracks with frequent corners and restarts, and for players who prefer to recover quickly after getting hit rather than to hold a high top speed.
Why the answer depends on the player
The most useful expert view comes from Adrian Vaughn’s GameFAQs kart guide, completed on 24 June 2006. It states the principle directly:

“Only one person can decide which Kart you will use: YOU. Only YOU can decide whether you prefer speed over acceleration, or handling over offroad, or width over shocks, or whatever.”
That is an exact quotation from the GameFAQs guide. The guide is more than twenty years old, so treat its category leaders as the author’s judgment at the time rather than a current consensus.

Character and seat choice change the kart
A kart carries two characters, and the choice of who sits where matters as much as the vehicle. Nintendo’s official Japanese FAQ, on its Q&A page, says the front character drives and the rear character handles items. Seats can be switched during a race. Nintendo’s Nintendo UK game page also highlights character-specific special items, which can change how a pairing plays. A fast kart with a weak item user can underperform a slower kart with a strong one, so test pairings rather than picking a kart alone.
Where the ratings are limited
- The stars are coarse. A 4 and a 5 may differ by much less than the labels suggest, and the star display is less precise than the underlying values.
- The table reflects displayed ratings, not measured lap times or hidden physics.
- The GameFAQs guide is dated, so its claims about category leaders should be checked against your own play.
Getting started
You need the game itself to test these choices. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was released for Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo UK’s listing gives a release date of 14 November 2003 for that region. Start with the Parade Kart if you want the broadest options, then try the Koopa Dasher on tight courses and the Koopa King where long straights reward top speed.
