For a melee mercenary that needs to survive while contributing physical damage, Fortitude is a strong all-around choice. Treachery is a compelling alternative when faster attacks, Fade utility, or a more attainable rune recipe matter more. There is no universal winner: the right armor depends on the mercenary’s role, the rest of its gear, and which runes and armor base you can actually use.
Which mercenary armor should you choose?
This comparison covers Diablo II: Resurrected Expansion-mode mechanics. The familiar Act II Desert Warrior is a melee fighter who uses Jab and provides an aura, so body armor can support both survival and physical offense. Blizzard’s Patch 2.4 notes also say that all six Act II aura types became available through the Nightmare and Hell hire menus; the mercenary’s aura choice does not by itself make one of these armors universally best.
| Armor | Best fit | Key documented bonuses | Runeword recipe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fortitude | A melee mercenary for whom defense, resistances, and physical damage are priorities | +300% enhanced damage, +200% enhanced defense, life per character level, and +25–30 to all resistances | Four sockets; El + Sol + Dol + Lo |
| Treachery | A mercenary that benefits from faster attacks and Fade utility, or a player who can make this recipe sooner | +45% increased attack speed, +20% faster hit recovery, +30% cold resistance, and a 5% chance to cast level 15 Fade when struck | Three sockets; Shael + Thul + Lem |
These are item attributes, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. The practical choice is Fortitude’s damage and defensive package versus Treachery’s attack speed and chance to trigger Fade. Consider what the mercenary still needs after accounting for its weapon and other equipment.
When Fortitude is the better fit
Fortitude suits a melee mercenary expected to take hits and contribute physical damage. Its listed bonuses include +300% enhanced damage, +200% enhanced defense, +15 defense, life that scales with character level, +7 replenish life, +25–30 to all resistances, and damage reduced by 7. The full recipe is El + Sol + Dol + Lo in a four-socket body armor.

- Diablo II: Resurrected breathes new life into Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed ARPG and its expansion, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, from beginning to end. Return to fight for Sanctuary and discover the fate of the mysterious Dark Wanderer rebuilt in all-new 3D graphics, brand-new cinematics, remastered audio… and the same classic Diablo II gameplay you remember.
Its strengths are most relevant when the mercenary’s survival and physical contribution are both important. The recipe also calls for a four-socket base and a Lo rune, so whether Fortitude is the practical choice depends on having those ingredients and a suitable armor base. The item details and recipe are listed in Wowhead’s Fortitude guide.
When Treachery is the better fit
Treachery’s +45% increased attack speed can favor a mercenary whose role benefits from attacking more quickly. It also provides +20% faster hit recovery and +30% cold resistance. When struck, it has a 5% chance to cast level 15 Fade; on striking, it has a 25% chance to cast level 15 Venom. Its recipe is Shael + Thul + Lem in a three-socket body armor.

That combination makes Treachery a credible alternative when you value attack speed and its proc effects, or can assemble the recipe before Fortitude. Its faster attacks do not make it an automatic upgrade: compare its benefits with the defensive and damage bonuses your particular mercenary needs. See Wowhead’s Treachery guide for the listed item attributes.
How to decide for your mercenary
- Choose Fortitude when you want the armor’s documented mix of physical damage, defense, life, and resistances for a mercenary that fights in melee.
- Choose Treachery when attack speed, hit recovery, and the chance to cast Fade are a better match for your setup, or its three-socket recipe is the one you can make.
- Check the rest of the gear. If the weapon and other equipment already meet the mercenary’s defensive needs, the value you place on added damage or attack speed may change the decision. This is a build judgment, not a published comparative test.
- Check the base and sockets. Fortitude requires four sockets; Treachery requires three. Make sure the body armor base suits your intended use and can accept the recipe.
What if you cannot make either runeword?
Fortitude and Treachery are not the only possible body armors. A mercenary guide lists unique options including Shaftstop, Skin of the Flayed One, and Spirit Forge, with defensive or life-related benefits. Treat these as alternatives to consider when you lack the runes or a suitable runeword base, rather than as a definitive ranking. Wowhead’s mercenary guide covers mercenary equipment and runewords.

Stone also appears in player discussion as a defense and hit-recovery alternative, but the cited comparison is an individual forum thread from 2021, not authoritative evidence for a general ranking: “Fortitude or stone for merc armor?”

Blizzard’s Patch 2.4 notes document the expanded Act II hiring options. In the balance PTR developer comments, Blizzard’s Diablo II: Resurrected development team said: “With the general improvements to ‘Thorns,’ we wanted to improve the level scaling to make this aura mercenary type more meaningful.” That comment concerns Thorns, not a Fortitude-versus-Treachery armor test.

The item guides cited here display 2023 update dates and Season 14 labels, while the mercenary overview displays Season 13. Those references establish the listed item mechanics, but they do not establish a current-season ranking or confirm whether a later balance change altered the relative recommendation. The sound conclusion is role-based: Fortitude is a strong general-purpose pick for a melee mercenary that needs damage and durability; Treachery is a strong alternative for attack speed and proc utility.
