Swift is the best default pickaxe enchantment for most Stardew Valley players who want faster routine mining and dungeon traversal: it makes default tool swings 33% faster, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Forge reference. It is not the universal winner: Powerful suits players who want extra power against tougher targets, while Efficient helps conserve energy during repeated tool use.
How the three pickaxe enchantments compare
| Enchantment | Effect | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Swift | Increases default tool swing speed by 33% (Stardew Valley Wiki, year not stated in the search result; Forge reference). | Routine mining and traversal, when faster swings are the priority. |
| Powerful | Adds one extra power level to the pickaxe (Stardew Valley Wiki, year not stated in the search result; Forge reference). | Targets where additional power may save hits. |
| Efficient | Removes energy drain when using the tool (Stardew Valley Wiki Forge reference). | Repeated pickaxe use when preserving energy matters more than swing speed. |
Which enchantment should you choose?
Choose Swift for general mining
Swift is the strongest all-round recommendation because its faster swings apply broadly to ordinary pickaxe use. It is a practical default, not a claim that it wins every situation or saves a fixed number of hits on every target.
Choose Powerful when extra power matters
Powerful adds one power level, which can be useful when working on tougher targets. As a baseline, an Iridium Pickaxe breaks copper nodes in one hit, iron nodes in two, gold nodes in three, and iridium nodes in six, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Pickaxes reference (publication date not stated in the search result). Those baseline counts do not establish exactly how many hits Powerful saves for every target.
Choose Efficient to conserve energy
Efficient removes energy drain when the tool is used. Pick it if stamina management is your main concern during repeated use; it is an energy benefit, not a direct increase to mining speed.

How to get or replace a pickaxe enchantment
- Reach the Forge. It is on floor 10 of the Volcano Dungeon. A Mini-Forge can also be crafted after Combat Mastery and placed elsewhere; see the Forge reference.
- Bring the materials. Each tool enchantment costs one Prismatic Shard and 20 Cinder Shards, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki.
- Enchant and check the result. The enchantment is random. If it is not the one you want, apply another enchantment at the same cost to replace it. The tool tracks its previous two enchantments, so those are not immediately selected again.
- Upgrade without losing it. Upgrading a tool preserves its enchantment; see the Tools reference.
Enchantment ordering changed in the 1.6 update. For version-sensitive details, check the official Stardew Valley 1.6 update notes alongside the current Forge reference.
