Neither number is an official matchmaking rule from Bandai Namco, and no published data shows which level has the most active players. Treat 125 to 150 as a practical starting window, then adjust for whether you want to duel or invade.
Why 125 to 150 is the working range
Windows Central’s Elden Ring PvP guide describes level 125 as the community meta level and recommends staying within 125 to 150 for general guidance. It also notes that duels and late-game invasions remain available above 125. The guide is a secondary source written by a publication, not official matchmaking data, but it gives the same window that most player discussion points to.
Why there is no official best level
- No publisher rule. Bandai Namco’s patch notes do not define a PvP level meta. The 125 and 150 figures are community conventions, not game rules.
- No population statistics. No published player count, survey, or matchmaking dataset identifies which level is most active on each platform or in each region.
- No published matchmaking formula. Invasion and duel matching are not documented in a way that lets a player calculate the best level.
“Best” therefore depends on what you want to do and who you want to meet. A level that suits duelists may be a poor fit for invaders, and the reverse is also true.
The three levels players actually cite
Level 125: the duel reference point
In a Steam discussion opened February 26, 2025, asking whether the PvP meta had shifted after the DLC, one commenter said level 125 remained the duel meta. The same commenter said invasion and hosting builds often went higher. This is one person’s report, not a measured count of matches, so treat 125 as a common reference point rather than the only level with active duelists.

Level 150: the broader build budget
Level 150 is also a common choice and remains active in PvP. The Windows Central guide describes active duels at this level, and players in the same discussion report it as common for invasions and hosting. A higher level gives more room for a heavier build, which is why many invaders settle here rather than at 125. The trade-off is that a higher level does not automatically mean better matches for every area.
Level 139: a reported compromise
One commenter in the Steam discussion suggested level 139 as a way to reach players who target the 125 pool and the 150 pool with one character. It is a community suggestion, not a guaranteed optimum. The discussion does not establish that 139 produces better matchmaking, and no source confirms how many players sit at that level.

Invasions depend on weapon upgrades as well as level
Character level is only half of the invasion picture. Windows Central notes that invasion matching also accounts for weapon upgrade level, so two characters at the same level can be matched differently if their weapons differ. The guide includes a location-by-location table of recommended levels and weapon upgrades, from early low-level areas to endgame areas. Use those rows only for the areas you plan to invade, and remember that the table comes from an older guide and reflects recommendations, not measured activity.

- Decide whether you mainly duel, invade, or host, since that determines which pool matters most.
- Pick a level from the 125 to 150 window, or 139 if you want one character to cover both pools.
- Choose the areas you intend to invade and check the Windows Central location table for the recommended level and weapon upgrade for each.
- Upgrade your weapon to the level listed for those areas before testing invasions, then adjust if your matches feel mismatched.

What the community disagreement shows
The same Steam discussion contains conflicting views. One response describes a broad preference range of 100 to 200 and calls 150 an average. Another commenter highlights levels 75, 150, and 200 as suited to different experiences. These are individual opinions. They show that “best” depends on mode, build, and the pool you want to reach, and they should not be read as a population measurement.

As of October 2026, the most recent official patch notes from Bandai Namco are version 1.17, dated August 27, 2026. The notice includes PvP-exclusive changes to Rakshasa’s Great Katana and two incantations, along with other general updates. It says nothing about the best character level. The notice states, “This update is required for online play,” so make sure your game is updated before you test PvP. It lists PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and Steam as supported platforms.
