The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is the best-selling Magic: The Gathering set of all time, according to head designer Mark Rosewater in Wizards of the Coast’s retrospective on 2023. The claim identifies the record-holder but does not include sales figures or explain how sales were counted.
The current all-time record-holder
In “Looking Back, Part 2,” Mark Rosewater wrote of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth: “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it went on to be the best-selling Magic set of all time.” Rosewater is Magic’s head designer, and the retrospective discusses the set’s success as part of the game’s 2023 releases.
This is an official statement naming the set, not a detailed sales report. The article gives no total number of units sold, revenue figure, geographic scope, time window, or ranking methodology. It also does not specify whether “set” sales include only boosters or other products associated with the release. Those details cannot be inferred from the record claim.
Why older sources name Theros
The answer was different in 2014. In “State of Design 2014,” Rosewater described Theros as “currently the best-selling Magic set of all time.” The word “currently” makes the statement time-specific: Theros held the record as Rosewater described it then, while his later retrospective names The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
These statements establish a change in the record-holder, but they do not provide comparable sales totals for either set.
