For a classic long-range, single-shot sniper role, Widowmaker is the best-supported pick in the verified evidence. Gunfire Games’ November 5, 2024 balance update increased its damage and improved its handling. Crossbow is a precision alternative with projectile-based shots, while Sureshot is a sniper-like sidearm rather than a long-gun replacement. This recommendation reflects dated patch notes and weapon data—not a universal ranking or confirmed October 2026 meta.
Why Widowmaker is the pick for a traditional sniper role
Widowmaker best fits the familiar sniper rhythm: line up a shot, deal substantial damage, then reload. The Remnant 2 Wiki.gg long-gun table lists it with a one-round magazine, 150 base damage, a 35m ideal range, and an 85m falloff range. Those figures describe the weapon listing, not guaranteed damage in every build or encounter. The weapon’s wiki page is not among the cited evidence; therefore, the table values are based on the Remnant 2 Wiki.gg entry referenced in the supplied evidence, for which no URL was provided.

Gunfire Games’ November 5, 2024 Patch 451,008 raised Widowmaker’s damage from 125 to 150, reduced recoil from 7 to 5 and horizontal recoil from 0.4 to 0.25, and slightly increased reload speed. The developer said the changes were intended to keep the sniper rifle viable as a one-shot damage option. Read the official patch notes.
The recommendation is about role and feel, not a proven damage-per-second victory. The available sources do not provide standardized DPS tests, win rates, or player preference data, and they do not establish a definitive DPS winner among Widowmaker, Crossbow, and Sureshot.

Which precision weapon fits your playstyle?
| Weapon | Role and slot | What the November 5, 2024 update changed | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Widowmaker | Long gun; traditional single-shot sniper | Damage 125 to 150; recoil 7 to 5; horizontal recoil 0.4 to 0.25; reload slightly faster | Players who want a deliberate, high-damage shot and can work with a one-round magazine. |
| Crossbow | Long gun; projectile-based precision weapon | Damage 120 to 125; projectile speed 15,000 to 16,500; reserves 27 to 30; ideal range 23m to 26m; falloff range 70m to 75m; stagger bonus 10% to 20%; reload slightly faster | Players who prefer projectile shots and value the update’s longer listed range, higher reserves, and stagger. |
| Sureshot | Secondary weapon; precision sidearm | Damage 110 to 115; weakspot bonus 110% to 115%; stagger bonus 10% to 20%; recoil reduced; reload and post-reload responsiveness improved | Players who want a sniper-like option in the sidearm slot, not a substitute for a long-gun sniper. |
All before-and-after values above are changes documented by Gunfire Games on November 5, 2024, not player-performance measurements. The developer described Crossbow as hitting harder, reaching farther, and firing more often; for Sureshot, it described changes intended to reward accuracy and called it a “pocket sniper” already strong in certain builds. The official notes contain the full weapon adjustments and developer comments.
How to choose between them
- Choose Widowmaker if you want the clearest traditional sniper identity: one high-damage long-gun shot followed by a reload.
- Choose Crossbow if projectile-based precision suits you better. Its updated projectile speed, reserves, range figures, and stagger bonus make it a distinct alternative, not simply a faster Widowmaker.
- Choose Sureshot if you want precision damage from your secondary slot. Its role and slot make it a complement or build choice rather than a direct long-gun comparison.
In practice, weigh shot cadence and reload tolerance, projectile versus direct precision feel, range, weapon slot, and compatibility with your build. The patch notes document individual changes, but they do not compare the weapons under a shared build or encounter.

What the available balance history can confirm
The recommendation is anchored to Gunfire Games’ November 5, 2024 Patch 451,008. Its November 12, 2024 hotfix notes mention a Bonesaw fire-rate correction and other fixes, but do not report changes to Widowmaker, Crossbow, or Sureshot. That hotfix does not establish that no later balance updates occurred, so the evidence here cannot confirm the October 2026 meta. Read the official November 12 hotfix notes.
Acquisition locations and unlock requirements for these weapons are not established by the cited sources, so this comparison does not give instructions for obtaining them.
