Royalty is the best default starting class for most newcomers to Demon’s Souls, especially if you want a cautious opening with ranged magic. Its starting catalyst and Soul Arrow let you attack from a distance, and PlayStation’s beginner guide calls it the easiest choice for a new adventurer. That does not make it universally strongest: choose a melee-focused class if you would rather fight up close from the start.
What your starting class changes
Demon’s Souls has 10 starting classes, each with different initial stats and equipment, according to PlayStation’s 2009 character-creation guide. Your class affects your opening equipment, combat options and how readily you can use certain weapons or sorceries. It does not lock you into a permanent role: you can develop your character’s stats over time and move toward another build, though changing direction takes extra work.
Pick for the opening you want and the build you expect to enjoy, rather than treating the choice as irreversible. PlayStation’s 2020 guide to the PS5 remake likewise notes that characters can develop over time.
Why Royalty is a strong first-playthrough choice
Royalty begins with a catalyst and Soul Arrow, giving you a ranged attack option early. PlayStation describes the class as the easiest choice for a new adventurer because it can attack enemies from range. In the PS3-era guide, PlayStation also notes that Royalty starts at Soul Level 1 with the Fragrant Ring, which gradually restores magic points, and says its low level leaves room to customize stats early.

Its tradeoff is close-range toughness. The same 2009 guide warns that Royalty initially struggles in up-close combat. A community-maintained class reference lists Royalty’s starting Vitality as 8, so a player who wants to block and trade hits may prefer a more physical start. The “easiest” recommendation is practical guidance, not a measured ranking or proof that Royalty is strongest for every build.
Choose a melee alternative if you prefer close combat
Temple Knight: physical weapons with a healing miracle
Temple Knight suits a player who wants a physical opening with access to a miracle. A community-maintained class reference lists its starting kit as a Halberd, Heater Shield, Talisman of God and Heal. Its listed stats include 11 Vitality, 13 Endurance, 14 Strength, 12 Dexterity, 6 Magic and 13 Faith. These details support it as a playstyle-based alternative; PlayStation’s beginner guide does not rank it as the best class.

Knight: a familiar sword-and-shield start
If you want conventional sword-and-shield equipment, the community reference lists the Knight’s starting gear as a Long Sword, Mail Breaker, Kite Shield and Fluted Set. It describes Knight as versatile and a reasonable option for beginners. Choose it if that kit feels more comfortable than beginning with Royalty’s ranged-magic emphasis.

- Want to keep more distance early? Choose Royalty for its starting Soul Arrow and catalyst.
- Want to fight mainly with physical weapons? Consider Temple Knight or Knight for their listed melee equipment.
- Want a healing option alongside a physical start? Temple Knight begins with Heal, according to the community-maintained class reference.
- Unsure about your eventual build? Choose the opening kit you prefer; your starting class is not a permanent role, although changing direction requires additional stat investment.
