There is no officially prescribed best grip for the PS5 DualSense. The practical target is a relaxed two-handed hold that lets you reach the sticks, buttons and triggers without straining your fingers, wrists or forearms. Pair that position with regular breaks, and change the controller’s vibration, trigger or button settings if something feels uncomfortable.
Why there is no single official grip
Sony’s own documentation does not name one correct hand position for every player. Its design team did consider hand sizes when developing the DualSense. In an April 7, 2020 design announcement, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Platform Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip.” That describes how Sony changed the hardware during development. It is not a medical finding or a comparative test showing that one posture is ergonomically superior.
No independent comparative study of DualSense grips was identified in the official sources reviewed, so any claim that one hold is “the best” would go beyond the evidence. What the official guidance does establish is the set of warning signs and safeguards described below.
How to find a comfortable hold
Use these steps as a starting point, then adjust to your own hand size and play style.

- Rest your left and right hands around the two handles of the controller, so the body sits in your palms rather than being pinched between your fingertips.
- Keep your wrists in a neutral position, neither bent sharply up nor down, and let your forearms rest on your legs, a armrest or a table if you are seated.
- Place your thumbs on the sticks and face buttons, and your index fingers on the triggers. If reaching a control forces your hand to stretch or your fingers to lift off the body, shift the grip or reposition your arms.
- Hold the controller firmly enough to keep control, but do not squeeze harder than you need to. Continuous hard gripping is a common source of hand fatigue during long sessions.
- Re-check the position after a few minutes of play. If you notice tension creeping into your hands, relax, reposition and take a break.
Firm grip for motion controls
The one place where Sony’s manual gives an explicit grip instruction is motion-control use. There, the manual says to keep a firm grip so the controller does not slip from your hands. This is a safety instruction for movement-based games, and it does not change the advice for ordinary button-and-stick play, where a relaxed hold is the goal. If a game asks you to swing or move the controller, keep the wrist and grip secure rather than loosening it.
Breaks and when to stop
Sony’s DualSense manual recommends a 15-minute break for every hour of play. Taking breaks on that schedule is the simplest protection against fatigue, and it gives your hands a chance to reset before you return to the controller.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
The manual also gives a clear stop rule. In Sony’s words: “Stop using the product immediately if you begin to feel tired or if you experience discomfort or pain in your hands or arms while operating the controller.” If discomfort continues after you stop, the manual says to consult a doctor. A change of grip may make play more comfortable, but it should not be treated as a cure for pain, and persistent symptoms need professional assessment.
Turning off vibration and trigger effects
Sony’s manual advises against using vibration or trigger effects if they may affect a hand or arm condition you have. To disable them, go to Settings > Accessories on the PS5 and adjust the controller options there. Menu labels can change with system software updates, so if the path differs on your console, look for the DualSense accessory options in the Accessories menu.

Remapping buttons to reduce strain
If a control is awkward to reach, you can reassign it. PS5 accessibility settings include custom button assignments for the DualSense. The documented path is Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller. Moving a frequently used action onto a button that is easier to reach can reduce the stretching that causes discomfort, particularly in games with many simultaneous inputs.
Alternatives if a standard controller is hard to use
Some players cannot comfortably use a standard controller at all. Two official options are relevant here, and neither is needed for ordinary grip advice.

The Access controller is designed around accessibility customization, not as a better grip for everyone. Sony’s announcement says the product was refined through playtests with dozens of participants across three continents. That detail describes product development, not evidence that the Access controller performs better than a standard DualSense for most players.

Start with a relaxed two-handed hold and the 15-minute-per-hour break schedule. If a control is hard to reach, remap it or adjust the vibration and trigger settings. If pain or tiredness persists or grows worse, stop playing and consult a doctor. If you cannot comfortably use a standard controller even after these changes, look at the Access controller or the second-controller assistance feature.
