The answer depends on your edition. In Minecraft Java Edition, the commonly documented command is /summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}. In Bedrock Edition, a community-reported command is /summon axolotl ~~~ facing @p minecraft:entity_born. Both only work if commands or cheats are enabled in your world, and neither is confirmed by an official Mojang command reference. If you want a blue axolotl without commands, breeding is the legitimate alternative.
Which command applies to your edition
The two editions use different summon syntax, and pasting one into the other will fail. Use the table below to find the right line before you open the chat window.

Java Edition: the summon command
Type the command in the chat window, with commands enabled, and the axolotl appears at your current position (~ ~ ~ means “here”). The {Variant:4} part sets the axolotl’s color. The third-party generator maps variant 4 to blue, and Mojang’s own 1.21.5 notes use the name blue for the same variant list, so the color value is consistent with official naming. What the official material does not show is the exact summon string, so treat the command as a widely shared syntax rather than a documented Mojang feature.
If the axolotl appears in another color, check the spelling and braces first. Then confirm that your game is on Java 1.21 or later, because the generator’s claim is limited to that range. Older versions may not accept the same variant data.

Bedrock Edition: the spawn-event command
The Bedrock command uses a spawn event, minecraft:entity_born, which tells the game to run the event that creates the entity. The community post reports that this produces a blue axolotl. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference supports the general structure of /summon with spawn events, but it does not name this axolotl event or confirm the blue result.
Because the result rests on user reports, test it in your current Bedrock build before relying on it. If the command is rejected, copy the position and event parts exactly as shown and check that the entity name is axolotl. If it runs but produces another color, the reported behavior may no longer match your version, and breeding is the more reliable route.

Turning on commands and cheats
Neither command runs in a standard survival world. The requirements differ by edition:
- Java single-player: enable Allow Commands when creating the world, or in the world’s settings if you are editing an existing one.
- Bedrock single-player: enable Allow Cheats in the world options. Be aware that turning on cheats permanently disables achievements in that world, even if you turn cheats off later. Use a separate world if you care about achievements.
- Multiplayer (either edition): the server or host must allow commands, and your account must have operator or equivalent permission. Without it, the commands are rejected.
Breeding: the gameplay route to a blue axolotl
Blue axolotls are not a separate spawn in normal play. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.17.1 release notes state that blue axolotls can now only be obtained through breeding. Bedrock Edition 1.17.0 release notes describe blue as a rare breeding mutation, with a “small chance” of occurring. Neither official note gives a numerical probability, so do not expect a fixed rate.

- Collect an axolotl bucket and tropical fish buckets, which both appear in Minecraft’s bucket documentation.
- Use the tropical fish bucket to feed the axolotls you want to breed.
- Repeat with more pairs if the first litter is not blue. Each offspring’s color is decided at birth.
When a command does not work
- Confirm that commands or cheats are enabled for this specific world, not just in the game settings menu.
- Check the edition. A Java command in Bedrock, or a Bedrock command in Java, will fail.
- Confirm you have operator permission on multiplayer servers.
- If the command runs but no blue axolotl appears, the version may not support that syntax. Breeding works in every edition that supports blue axolotls.
