The descriptions overlap: “offensive” signals an emphasis, not an exemption from defensive responsibility. Neither label has an official statistical cutoff.
What the labels mean
Both terms describe a defenseman’s style or strengths, not separate positions. Defensemen still have defensive duties; the distinction is how a player balances those duties with moving the puck and joining attacks. The Seattle Kraken’s positions explainer describes defensemen’s responsibilities and the choices involved in supporting offense.
Two-way defenseman: balance in both directions
“Two-way” emphasizes that a player contributes at both ends of the ice. That means dependable defensive play alongside useful puck movement, rush support, or other offensive contributions. It does not mean the player must produce a particular number of points or be equally strong in every aspect.
Offensive defenseman: an attacking emphasis
An offensive defenseman is particularly effective at helping generate offense—for example, by moving the puck, joining a rush, or contributing on the power play. The label identifies a strength or role emphasis, not a claim that the player cannot defend.

Can a defenseman be both?
Yes. A player can be an offensive catalyst and still be reliable in defensive coverage. The labels are overlapping descriptions rather than mutually exclusive categories. In a 2019 Washington Post report, NHL defenseman Drew Doughty challenged the old stereotype of an offense-first player who cannot defend: “I like to think how the definition of a pure guy — can’t play defense, only good on the power play — that role has kind of phased its way out of the NHL a little bit.”
How to compare two defensemen
Instead of relying on a single label or scoring total, look at the different parts of a player’s game:
- Defensive play: How reliably does the player cover opponents and handle defensive-zone responsibilities?
- Puck movement: Can the player help move the puck out of the defensive zone and advance play?
- Rush support: Does the player join attacks or create options for teammates without neglecting defensive coverage?
- Offensive contribution: How does the player help create chances at even strength and on the power play?
The NHL’s NHL EDGE provides tracking metrics and player comparisons that can help viewers examine aspects of performance. Those metrics do not officially classify players as “two-way” or “offensive.”

No official definition or numerical threshold separates the two labels in the sources cited here. Points, assists, power-play production, or a tracking metric on its own cannot establish that a defenseman belongs in one category. The NHL glossary explains official hockey terminology and scoring statistics, but does not define either role label. NHL coaching discussion likewise addresses defensemen’s growing involvement in attack while maintaining defensive-zone coverage; it is context about playing style, not a formal taxonomy (NHL Coaches’ Room).
