Video gaming is the broad activity of playing video games; online gaming is playing a game over the internet. They are not competing categories: an online game is a video game, and video games can be played offline, online, or both. Neither term specifies a particular device, and online play does not necessarily mean multiplayer.
How the terms differ
| Question | Video gaming | Online gaming |
|---|---|---|
| What does it describe? | The broad activity of playing computer or video games. | A way of playing: the game connects over the internet. |
| Does it require an internet connection? | No. A game may work offline, online, or in both modes. | Yes. Internet connectivity is the defining feature. |
| Does it specify a device? | No. Video games run on different kinds of devices. | No. Online games can be played on computers, consoles, and wireless or mobile devices. |
| Does it require multiplayer? | No. | No. Online play can involve other players, but the term itself does not guarantee multiplayer. |
The distinction is about two separate dimensions: “video gaming” names the activity, while “online” describes connectivity. The OECD’s 2005 report also treats connectivity (online or offline) separately from hardware (such as PC, console, or wireless), a useful conceptual distinction rather than a guide to today’s market. OECD report, “Online Computer and Video Games”.
Can you play video games offline?
Yes. Some games can still be played without an internet connection, while others may offer additional features when connected. A single game can therefore include both offline and online play. The Australian eSafety Commissioner describes offline availability and the possibility of extra online features in its gaming guidance.
Does online gaming mean playing with other people?
Not necessarily. Multiplayer is one common form of online play, but “online” refers to the internet connection, not the number of players. The connection may support shared play or other networked features; the exact features depend on the game. LAN play, where devices connect over a local network, is another way to play together and is distinct from playing over the internet.

Can online games be played on consoles and phones?
Yes. Online gaming is not tied to a specific platform. The eSafety Commissioner lists computers, smartphones, virtual reality headsets, and specialised gaming consoles as ways to access games. The device and the connection are separate questions: a console or phone game can be online, offline, or offer both modes.
What online features should players and parents check?
Connected features vary by title. The ESRB’s Interactive Elements can flag features such as interaction with other users, location sharing, in-game purchases, and unrestricted internet access. Those notices describe functionality; they are different from an age rating or content descriptor, which addresses suitability and game content. See the ESRB ratings guide for how its ratings and notices are presented.

How common is online play?
Online play is widespread, but prevalence figures are survey context rather than definitions. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2024 Essential Facts report for the United States says 88% of players had played games online and 74% had played with others both online and in person. These are ESA-published figures for its 2024 U.S. report, not universal estimates. ESA, 2024 Essential Facts About the U.S. Video Game Industry.
