What Is the Difference Between Set Boosters and Draft Boosters?

Set Boosters were built for opening and collecting, while Draft Boosters were built for Booster Draft and Sealed. Wizards later merged both into Play Boosters.

Set Boosters and Draft Boosters were two separate Magic: The Gathering booster products with different jobs. Set Boosters were built for opening and collecting. Draft Boosters were built for Limited play, meaning Booster Draft and Sealed. Wizards of the Coast later combined both roles into a single product called Play Boosters, so a booster bought for a new set today is most likely a Play Booster rather than either original type.

What each booster was designed to do

Set Boosters: built for opening

Wizards introduced Set Boosters in 2020 as a product for players who wanted a more engaging pack-opening experience. In Mark Rosewater’s launch article, dated July 25, 2020, the design varied the common, uncommon, and rare slots from pack to pack. A Set Booster could contain multiple rares or mythic rares, an art card, and, depending on the set, “The List” cards. Wizards also described the opening as a structured sequence it called “chapters.” These details were set-dependent, so they describe the design as published, not a fixed promise for every release.

The launch-era comparison is the clearest example. In the Zendikar Rising design, a Set Booster held 14 objects, 12 of them Magic cards. The contemporary Draft Booster in that same 2020 comparison held 16 cards, 15 of them Magic cards. Those counts apply to that launch-era design and should not be treated as the count for later sets.

Draft Boosters: built for Limited

Draft Boosters existed to support Booster Draft and Sealed play. In Booster Draft, each player opens a pack, selects a card, passes the rest of the pack, and repeats with further packs. Players then build a deck from the pool they drafted, as Wizards explains in its Booster Draft guide by Jorgen Schets, published November 8, 2017. That process only works if every pack contains enough playable cards and a reasonably balanced color spread, which is why the Draft Booster’s card mix was controlled.

In its 2023 explanation of Play Boosters, Wizards gave the typical Draft Booster structure as ten commons, three uncommons, and one rare or mythic rare. That baseline excludes traditional foil cards, and special cases can change the contents. It is a typical structure, not a rule that applies to every set.

Why Wizards merged the two products

Rosewater’s October 16, 2023 article explains the problem. Most people who opened boosters did not use them for Limited formats, which led to the Set Booster. Set Boosters became popular, but as Rosewater put it, “The problem is that Set Boosters are not designed for Limited play.” Stores still needed Draft Boosters to run Draft and Sealed events, so the two products were serving different needs with the same kind of pack.

Wizards’ answer was a single core booster. As the article states, “The Set Booster and Draft Booster are being combined into a new type of booster we’re calling the Play Booster.” The stated goal was to “combine the play experience of a Draft Booster with the fun opening experience of a Set Booster.” Read the full article for the Play Booster’s contents, since this comparison does not cover them: What Are Play Boosters?

Which booster fits your goal

  • Drafting or Sealed with packs: Draft Boosters were designed for this. Set Boosters were not, and for a current set you should buy Play Boosters.
  • Opening packs for enjoyment or collecting an older set: A Set Booster offers the varied opening it was designed around. Because these are now limited to remaining stock, check availability before planning around one.
  • Buying for a new Magic set: Choose a Play Booster. Wizards’ MTG product guide is the reference for which product a set uses.

Checking what a listing actually sells

  1. Confirm the set name and its release date on the listing.
  2. Identify the package type in the title or description: Set Booster, Draft Booster, Play Booster, or Collector Booster. Older set names do not tell you which type was sold.
  3. Check the seller’s stock. Older Set Boosters can be scarce, so an active listing does not guarantee supply.
  4. Cross-check the set against the product guide before comparing prices.

Price differences

At launch in 2020, Wizards estimated that a Set Booster cost about one dollar more than a Draft Booster, with the premium varying by region. That was a launch-era estimate, not a current price comparison. If you compare prices today, match the set, language, pack type, date, and seller, because a gap between two listings may reflect any of those differences rather than the booster type itself.
