The Brotherhood is a post-war group introduced in the original Fallout; the Enclave is a remnant of the pre-war U.S. government introduced in Fallout 2. Their clearest head-to-head conflict is in Fallout 3, which Bethesda describes as a feud between them.
How are the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave different?
| Question | Brotherhood of Steel | Enclave |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | A post-war faction and one of the core elements of the original Fallout. | A “shadowy remnant of the Pre-War American government,” as Bethesda describes it in its Fallout timeline. |
| First game in Bethesda’s timeline | Fallout, set in 2161. | Fallout 2, set in 2241. |
| Directly documented conflict | One side of the faction feud Bethesda identifies in Fallout 3. | The other side of that Fallout 3 feud. |
That distinction is about each group’s broad origin and the conflict documented by Bethesda—not a claim that every member, chapter, or appearance behaves the same way throughout the series.
Why do they fight in Fallout 3?
Bethesda’s guide to Fallout 3 explicitly names a feud between the Brotherhood and the Enclave. The game is set around ruined Washington, D.C., in the Capital Wasteland. That makes it the clearest official entry point for seeing these two factions in direct opposition. Bethesda’s description establishes the feud, but its brief overview does not give a detailed account of each faction’s motives or internal doctrine.
Where do they fit in the Fallout timeline?
Bethesda dates the series’ relevant games to these years:
