The original Minecraft Launcher is the official application from Minecraft (Mojang Studios and Microsoft). Running either program does not prove that you own Minecraft. Ownership belongs to the Microsoft account that bought the game, and the official launcher is one of the places where you can check it.
Two different things the title can mean
“Original Minecraft” is used loosely. It can refer to the game itself, which you buy and license, or to the official Minecraft Launcher that starts it. TLauncher is a separate third-party launcher, so the comparison has two layers: the official launcher versus TLauncher, and the licensed game versus whatever a launcher lets you run. Keeping these apart prevents most of the confusion around this question.

What the license covers
Minecraft’s End-User License Agreement says that when you buy the games, you may download, install, and play them. It also says you must not distribute Minecraft software or make commercial use of Minecraft materials without permission. It allows original Java Edition mods under its stated conditions, and it treats distributing modified versions of the game differently from making original mods.
The license does not address TLauncher by name. It does set the rules for the game you run, whichever launcher starts it. A launcher is a way to open the game; it does not change what the license permits.

Accounts, editions, and platforms
- The EULA says a Microsoft account is required to buy Minecraft through the Minecraft website, the Microsoft Store, or Xbox.
- Minecraft’s account guide says a Microsoft account is needed to play on most platforms. Java Edition runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock runs on Windows, consoles, and mobile.
- Minecraft Help states that Java and Bedrock were bundled for PC on June 7, 2022. Editions bought before that date may be listed separately on your account, so check the Which PC editions page rather than assuming.
How to check whether your account owns Minecraft
Use this check before you assume anything about your license. It works regardless of which launcher you installed.
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher, or the Minecraft app in the Microsoft Store, and sign in with the Microsoft account you used to buy the game.
- Look at the edition shown. According to Minecraft Help, Play or Install means the account owns that edition, and Buy means it does not.
- If Play is missing, sign out and sign in again with the same account in the Minecraft Launcher, the Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app. Official troubleshooting says a missing Play button often means you are signed into the wrong account, not that the game has been removed. Older Java worlds after the account migration
Minecraft Help says the Mojang-account migration period ended on December 18, 2023. Local Java worlds may still be on your drive, but you cannot play them until you buy Java Edition using a Microsoft account. This applies to the migration rules described in Minecraft Help’s migration article. It does not mean every local world is lost.

Download safety: what the sources can and cannot establish
TLauncher’s own domain list names tlauncher.org as its official site. It warns that downloads from other websites may threaten your system and recommends checking the downloaded file’s digital signature. On Windows, you can check this in the file’s Properties dialog, under the Digital Signatures tab. This is guidance from the vendor about its own software. It is not an independent security audit, and this article does not scan or test the installer.
Minecraft’s license makes a related point. Its wording is: “It’s also important for us that 3rd party tools/services don’t seem “official” as we can’t guarantee their quality.” That supports keeping third-party software clearly separate from official Minecraft support. It is not a malware finding about TLauncher.

Which route fits your situation
- You already own Java or Bedrock for PC: install the official launcher from the Minecraft download page or the Microsoft Store, and sign in with the account that owns the game.
- You do not own the game: buy it through an official route from Minecraft. The download page presents the PC bundle, Java and Bedrock Edition, for purchase. Launching the game through any launcher does not replace the purchase.
- You want to use TLauncher: download it only from tlauncher.org, check the signature, and treat it as separate third-party software. Its launcher does not show that you own a license, and the EULA rules on distribution and modified versions still apply to what you do with the game.
