Total War: WARHAMMER III has its own story campaign, Realms of Chaos, and it adds Immortal Empires, the trilogy-scale sandbox that combines maps, races and Legendary Lords from all three games. It also brings newer multiplayer modes. Which one fits you depends on which story you want, which factions you want to play, and what you already own.
The two story campaigns
The biggest difference is the narrative. WARHAMMER II’s defining campaign is the Great Vortex, where the player works toward stabilizing or disrupting the Vortex through ritual play. The game launched with four races and eight Legendary Lords, each with distinct starts and mechanics, according to its Steam store page.
WARHAMMER III’s story mode is Realms of Chaos. SEGA’s launch-era FAQ described its new Kislev and Grand Cathay content and the Daemon Prince. Those details describe the game at launch, so treat them as historical rather than a description of today’s build.

#1 Best Overall
- Mortal Empires combined the maps and playable races of the first two games for eligible owners.
- Immortal Empires is the trilogy-scale sandbox. SEGA’s current player guide calls it “Total War: WARHAMMER’s flagship sandbox campaign,” and it combines maps, races, Legendary Lords and locations from all three games.
If you want the widest possible sandbox, Immortal Empires is the mode that matters. If you care mainly about a single narrative arc, the two story campaigns are the deciding factor.
Access and ownership
Owning WARHAMMER III does not automatically give you every race or Lord from the earlier games. Your owned games and DLC decide which factions you can play.
Rank #2
- From the icy peaks of Naggaroth to the arid reaches of the Southlands, each race struggles for dominion. As their conquests grow, the land turns crimson, and rivers run red with the blood of the slain!
- Blood for The Blood God brings a number of gory, mature-rated effects to Total War: WARHAMMER II
- Lords of the End Times packs: SEGA’s current guidance says these packs can provide entry to Immortal Empires and the same full campaign map.
- Unlock FAQ: SEGA’s Immortal Empires unlock FAQ says that owners of WARHAMMER I and II will now have access to Immortal Empires and The Lost God campaign from WARHAMMER III. That wording is tied to a specific update, so check the current FAQ for the route that applies today before you buy.
- Store library: Confirm which titles and DLC are already in your library, since that determines the races and Lords you can use.
Multiplayer
WARHAMMER III carries the more extensive documented multiplayer list, including the eight-player Realm of Chaos campaign and 1-v-1 Domination battles. SEGA’s player guide also says players with different content collections can play together. Each player’s usable races and Lords depend on their own ownership.
Which game to start with
- Start with WARHAMMER II if the Great Vortex story is your main draw, or if you want the four-race, eight-Lord launch experience described above.
- Start with WARHAMMER III if you want the newest story campaign, the newest multiplayer modes, or the broadest entry point to Immortal Empires. SEGA’s official series page recommends this order, and adds that players who want their included races should add the earlier games or DLC.
- Get both if you want the full Immortal Empires sandbox with the widest faction selection and both narrative arcs.
Checking specifications before you buy
