PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe easiest reliable method is EA’s 50/50 process. First confirm that the problem disappears with Mods and custom content (CC) removed. Then put files back in tracked batches, and keep splitting any batch that brings the problem back until one file or interaction is isolated. It needs no third-party tools, but it only finds problems you can reproduce, and it will not catch every outdated file, duplicate, or missing dependency.
Check for a known update problem first
Before touching any files, check whether the symptom is already known. EA’s community forum keeps a Mod and CC issue index, and its patch-specific Broken/Updated list shows which Mods and CC have problems after a game update. The most recent patch list we could confirm is labelled for patch 1.128 and dated September 22, 2026. Newer patches may have replaced it, so check the live index for your current version.

Find your game version in the lower-left corner of the Main Menu. You will need it for the index and for any creator you contact. Also read the creator’s post for compatibility notes and any required game packs. EA’s troubleshooting article notes that scripts and outdated Mods can cause certain error codes after an update, so an error code that appeared right after a patch points toward compatibility first.
A match in the index is a shortcut, not a verdict. If the item on the list is the one you use, update or remove it and retest. If nothing matches, continue to the vanilla test.

- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
Step 1: Test the game without Mods or CC
This test answers one question: is Mods or CC content involved at all? It does not identify the file.
- Close The Sims 4.
- Open Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Move the Mods folder out of this folder to a safe location. Move it; do not copy it, because the folder must not be present during this test.
- In the same folder, delete localthumbcache.package.
- Launch the game, choose Load from the Main Menu, and open the save, household, or scenario where the symptom appears.
- Read the result. If the symptom is gone, Mods or CC are implicated; go to Step 2. If the symptom remains, the cause is probably elsewhere in your setup.
One check matters before you trust a clean result. If Mods still appear in game, or an old save still loads custom content, you moved the wrong user folder. Confirm the path, then repeat the test.
Test-state rules that keep results honest
Most failed diagnoses come from a test that was not controlled. These rules apply to every round:
Rank #2
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers
- Escape to Forgotten Hollow
- Live the Immortal Life
- Use Load, not Resume. Resume can load autosave state, which means a round may not test what you think it tests.
- Do not save during a test. A save made with a suspect file can carry the problem into your real game.
- Delete localthumbcache.package between every round. Remove it from the Sims 4 folder before each launch, not just once at the start.
- Record every round. Note which batch was installed, whether the symptom appeared, and which batches are still untested.
Step 2: Restore files in tracked batches
Once vanilla testing shows that Mods or CC are involved, add files back in groups.
Recommended Free Tools
- If you have the disk space, make a full copy of the original Mods folder. This keeps your full set safe while you experiment.
- Divide the files into batches of similar size. Keep each dependency with the Mod that needs it (see the dependency section below).
- Place one batch into the newly generated Mods folder in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4.
- Delete localthumbcache.package, launch the game, choose Load, and repeat the exact action that produced the symptom.
- If the batch passes, leave it in place and add the next batch on the following round. If it fails, keep it in place and move to Step 3.
Step 3: Split a failing batch until one file remains
When a batch brings the symptom back, split it into smaller batches and repeat the same test. Continue halving the failing group until a single item reproduces the problem.
When one file looks responsible
Test that file alone, or with only the mesh, injector, or core library it requires. If the symptom returns with that minimal set, the file is the likely cause. If it passes alone, the interaction with another file is the more likely cause.

When every batch passed but the full folder fails
Some problems only appear when batches are combined. EA’s forum guide describes this as a conflict between batches. In that case, switch to additive testing: start from the batch that failed, then add the other passing batches one at a time, testing after each addition, until the combination that fails is identified.
Keep dependencies together
Many CC items do not work on their own. A clothing or object item may need a mesh file, a script injector, or a shared core library that sits in another Mod. Separating those files can make a working item look broken.

- Meshes: the visible model that another CC item references.
- Injectors: script files that other Mods rely on to run.
- Core libraries: shared files that several Mods use.
When you split a batch, move each dependency together with the Mod that needs it. If a test fails only after a dependency is removed, the dependency was the missing piece, not the culprit.

Remove or update the culprit carefully
- Delete the identified file, or replace it with the creator’s current compatible version.
- If the creator provides uninstall instructions for a complex Mod, follow them exactly rather than deleting files by hand.
- Delete localthumbcache.package after the removal, then relaunch and retest.
Take extra care with complex Mods such as world mods. Removing one can affect saved worlds, households, or whether a save loads at all. Do not remove that kind of content from a save that depends on it until you have checked the creator’s guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the 50/50 method is not enough
EA’s own guidance says there is no single way to determine whether Mods are the cause. The batch method can miss problems that are not caused by a game patch, including:
- Duplicate files that load the same content twice.
- Conflicts between Mods that only appear in combination.
- Missing dependencies, such as a required mesh or core library that is not installed.
- Mods that require a game pack you do not own.
- Incorrect installation, such as files placed in the wrong folder.
- Merged package files that contain a problematic item bundled with other CC.
If one of these is likely, the batch test will still show a failure, but it will not point to the cause. Check the installation and the creator’s requirements before repeating batches.

Conflict detectors are clues, not verdicts
Detectors and similar tools can flag files that overlap. EA’s forum guide states that overlap in game code does not by itself show that two Mods cause a gameplay conflict, and detectors cannot tell you whether a Mod is outdated. The guide mentions Better Exceptions as one way to locate duplicate files. Use a flag as a reason to test those two files, not as proof that either one is broken.
Platform and scope
EA defines Mods as player-created content, including both CC, such as clothing or objects, and gameplay Mods. According to EA’s installation page, Mods are available for PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox. The same page states that Maxis and EA do not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or CC. Any repair of a broken item therefore depends on the creator’s update or your own removal, not on an EA fix.
Optional file utilities
Third-party utilities can help with organisation or with identifying CC attached to a Sim or build. A 2024 creator tutorial demonstrates Sims 4 Mod Manager and Sims Tray Importer for these tasks. We did not confirm current safety, maintenance, or platform support for either tool, so verify them before use. They do not replace the isolation steps above.
